DiPoto, for his part, cast himself more as a purist than as a sabermetrician, calling himself a baseball historian first and foremost. Im a pretty simple guy, he said. I will never claim to be the equal of Josh Byrnes intellectually.

He added, I am anything but trying to reinvent the baseball wheel.

When I heard this, it kinda scared me. Lack of focus on stats turns teams into the Royals.

What did they ever do before sabermetrics came along??!

Played ball.

I was being saracstic, mocking jdub. Wink

But seriously, the game has advanced a lot since then.
Not the game itself, but the knowledge and understanding of it.

So you recommend the Diamondbacks hire Alexander Grothendieck as their next GM?

What do we know about Damon Oppenheimer, who appears to be in the running for the GM job?

I dont really know anything, but i think i would rather have Logan White or even Towers.

We know that the Yankees haven't developed any major league talent outside of Joba since he's held that role.

Phil Hughes? Cano? Robertson? Gardner is alright.

Lots of criticism about drafting Cito Culver this year.

I can see the headlines already.

"Oppenheimer Bombs"
"A project for Oppenheimer"
"Oppenheimer short of funds"
"Oppenheimer goes nuclear"
"Oppenheimer signs southpaw Enrico Fermi"

Yeah, slow day at work. Rolling Eyes

Wasn't Cano an international sign?
Yeah, we don't really do that here.

Actually he didn't become scouting director until 2005.
So Hughes and Cano weren't even him.

Not sure - but its still developing a young player.

We signed Wagner Mateo..

Either way - im not sure what about being in the Yankees system would help AZs situation. Doesnt seem to fit - which was the point of the posts...

Both White (good drafting and scouting experience) and Towers (low budget experience) have something that they can offer...

He was around as Director Player personell - so you could argue that he had impact on development... who knows really...

I would say pretty good.

http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=mateo-001wag

OPS is OK, Ks arent great. Fielding is pretty bad - although god only knows what the fields are like, and how the errors happened.

Dude only turned 17 in march...

Seems to have a good "eye" for someone who doesn't have very good eyes. .361 OBP while having an average below .250.

Any reason to feel optimistic about AZ making productive trades if the FO is looking over Jerry DiPoto's shoulder and having the ultimate say on deals?

KLaw

I'd like to think they'll give Jerry the benefit of the doubt. He's a bright guy, widely seen as a potential GM, and articulate enough to make a good case to ownership if he wants to do something.

I'd like to know this. I was hoping he'd get some consideration for the GM position.
