I say KJ one, Drew two.

KJ has a 907 OPS right now, best of any 2B in the National League that has gotten full playing time.

KJ's 2010 stats vs team stats

Drew is my second choice.. Right now his OPS is .818 3rd best in the NL behind Tulo and Hanley. (of the ones with any significant amount of ABs.)

Cant put Haren there... Upton?? Sorry, but no way.

This is a perfect example of why I hate the way the all star game is set up and voted on. Basically, if you are an established superstar, you go no matter what, and everyone else is based off of how you do in April or May.
One really hot month before June, and you are in

KJ Peaked on April 29th, when he was hitting .322/.429/.813 1.242 OPS thru his first 70 PA's.

Since April 30th: .236/.345/.386 .730 OPS in 149 PA's

Baseball should play the All Star game to START the season. Use it as a way to welcome back the fans. The voting can be conducted all during January/February and into mid March. It will build interest to a crescendo.

EVERYONE will go. Pitchers will go because it's spring and they just have to throw a couple of innings anyway. All the top position players will go because the season is just starting and they don't already have 4 months of accumulated aches and pains.

The voting and player selection will at least be based off of the entire previous season, as well as a players career.......not who happened to get hot in April.

Sorry......either Mark Reynolds or Justin Upton is this years all star. They are the best position players on the team, early season batting average woes and strikeouts notwithstanding. If I'm a fan that doesn't see all the players much, I want to see the most exciting, talented players each team has to offer. Who cares who started off the season in a slump ?

And really, don't you want to see Reynolds in the HR derby ? Or are you afraid that being in the HR derby will cause him to overswing the rest of the season ? Laughing Laughing

So, You hate that people vote - but you want the best players to be in based on YOUR vote. Wink Laughing

I think the players should select the teams.

No, I don't hate the people vote....I hate the TIMING, because it induces even smart, knowledgable fans to make their judgements based on a 4 week sample size. Razz

Its either going to be Young, Drew, Reynolds, or maybe even Kennedy if he can get his ERA a little lower. My bet is on Reynolds though, the NL already has enough outfielders as it is.

Shoewizard makes a good point about sample sizes but it's still really hard to justify sending someone who's OPS is among the worst at their position.

I want Drew to be there.
KJ was great in April, not so good since.
Drew's been great all year.
Side note: I can't wait until Drew kicks it up a notch in the second half. Very Happy

For those that like to just look at first half performance and base their vote on that, here are some numbers that some might find interesting:

WAR for batters as calculated by BB-Ref using total Zone for the defense portion:

Upton 2.3
Young 1.8
Johnson 1.3
Haren 1.0
Reynolds 0.8

I just love that DH is in there with only 48 PA's. Laughing

WAR for pitchers
Kennedy 1.9
Jackson 1.3
Lopez 1.1
Haren 0.9

Here is WAR for batters as calculated by Fangraphs, using UZR as the defense component:

Johnson 2.2
Upton 2.2
Young 2.1
Drew 1.7
Reynolds 1.7
Snyder 1.0
Montero 1.0
Haren 0.7

WAR for pitchers as calculated by Fangraphs, (which is based off of FIP and xFIP)

Haren 2.1
Jackson 1.6
Lopez 0.9
Kennedy 0.7
Heilman 0.3

I think if you are basing your argument on first half performance only, and you happen to prefer a total value approach, (i.e. including batting, pitching, fielding, baserunning) then a case could be made for any one of Johnson, Upton, Young, and Haren. But Harens case is weakest of these 4, IMHO
Reynolds slump has knocked him out of the race here, obviously.

However, if you want to reach back further than the beginning of this season, and evaluate who you think the best player has been over the past year or year and a half, then your choice probably has to be either Upton or Haren.

Chris Young, that would be my pick for the lone Diamondback all-star in 2010.

I was one of his biggest critics last year but he's come out swinging this year… and making contact with the ball. Razz

I was going to ask how WAR was calculated. I then decided to look it up myself. Holy nerd shit. This sucks the fun out of the game. Who comes up with this stuff?

FWIW I like CY for All Star but I agree with Shoe that this is based on timing. I also dont think the general public should be allowed to vote. If I was in charge only players and managers would be voting. Maybe and it is a BIG maybe I would allow some of the press to get a vote.

It's a shame rules require that at least one Dbacks player makes the all star game.
