Dontrelle Willis will attempt to resurrect his career with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Detroit Tigers will trade Willis to the Diamondbacks pending completion of a physical, a major league source told FanHouse.

The Tigers designated Willis for assignment on Saturday, giving them 10 days to trade him or pass him through waivers. Willis went 1-2 with a 4.98 ERA in nine appearances for the Tigers this season, walking 29 and striking out 33.

Willis' agent, Matt Sosnick, told the Arizona Republic on Monday that the Diamondbacks were among Willis' preferred destinations, especially considering the pitcher and his wife already are in the process of buying a house in Arizona.

Willis' former team, the Marlins, also expressed interest in trading for the lefty, a source confirmed to FanHouse's Jeff Fletcher.

It's in the 2010 starting pitching thread.

But yeah, it should have it's own thread.

Good move. Throwing shit at the wall. Lets see if it sticks.

I think the change of scenery could do well for Willis. Plus it helps that we're a team he wants to play for.

Any clues yet as to who we are gonna give up?

Also how does the contract situation work out since Willis still has a fair bit of money due?

I think the front office is trying to do something to distract the fans from this catastrophic season.

Willis is worth taking a flier on. He could use a change of scenery, and he wants to play here.

I hope we don't give up roque mercedes or leyson septimo though. Anyone else is fine.

If he's healthy he can help salvage some of the season. He's at least better than most of the other crap we are throwing out there every fifth day. Also, he's an FA after the season ends so we don't have any long term implications here. Hopefully we didn't give up much.

I bet we'll give up Gutierrez. Then after 10 games with Detroit, he'll have a 1.34 ERA on their roster.

This is what I'm praying for. I don't care either way, they both suck.

Not sure if we'll get word on how much cash Detroit sent along, we have to assume all that he's due in 2010 except maybe ~500k.

Willis > Buckner so at least we have that going for us.

Well, he can't be worse than Buckner, who we've seen enough of to know that he's definitely NOT a major league-caliber pitcher.

My brother who lives in Phoenix said he heard on the radio or something that the D-Backs are going to pay Willis the prorated vet minumum with the Tigers picking up the rest. If true not that bad of a deal.

Can't hurt to get Willis but congratulations to Buckner. He gets to jump off this trainwreck and, getting away from the D'backs, his ERA will immediately shrink to under 2.00 and he'll become and incredibly effective pitcher. Laughing

I'll be interested to see how this works out.

Im on board fella's as long as Detroit is picking up most of the bill except for the league minimum or so.

Willis could be decent rebounder but the good thing is none of us are expecting much and we dont seem to have given up anything of note.

Either way, Detroit will be responsible for all but the MLB minimum, and Arizona will pay the minimum, the same minimum they would be paying Buckner.

Arizona actually saves money by not letting him hit free agency, and being able to get Buckner off their books.

So the Kitty Cats are eating all but the minimum and taking Buckner? Sounds like a perfect trade for us. Score.

Think Willis will be on the mound Friday taking Buckner's spot?
