I'm sure somebody here will know better than me and actual numbers aren't available yet, but the contract seems to be a hell of a bargain for the organization.

This is damned good unexpected news.

Color me suspect, given the news is coming from Robothal.
This prospective deal would be the logical agreement range, given how he compares to his expected comps (Miggy, HanRam, etc), but I figured it would take above expected money to appease the Upton family.

I hope Robothal isn't blowing smoke here...

$50 million is a LOT of money but if that amount is true then he's leaving a lot on the table. Shit, his first two years of FA are probably worth close to $40M alone.

Either way, good for the org and Justin. I hope this is true.

Smokey's link uses Nick Markakis as a comp and he's projected to earn $47M over a similar time frame.

This is freaking badass if it's true.

$50M is a lot of money, but we are actually getting some FA years here, unlike the contracts I have seen mentioned for him and Reynolds previously.

Get it done Josh Byrnes!!!

I love this. 6/50MM is nothing for someone of J-Up's caliber.
That is, assuming he stays healthy. (knocks on wood)

This is not raining on the parade, btw. I think this is a very good deal.
Didn't think AZ would be able to sign him long term, btw. So kudos to JB and the team.

I think we're all in agreement that this would be a good signing at a good price. Naysayers, go on record now, or forever hold your second-guessing.

Also comparable to Ryan Braun's $45 million contract that also buys out his first two years on free agency (though Braun's deal is over 8 years).

If it is 5 years, would that only buy out 1 FA year? This year plus 3 years of arb, and 1 FA year by my count.

Yes, unless this deal begins in 2011, which I have read is a possibility.

It's six years. This year, the three arb years, and two FA years. It's a great deal with the emphasis, as Levski pointed out, on health.

Maybe we can get Reynolds signed after this year (to say, 5/40-45MM) and we'll be set.

This is awesome. Gambo and Ash confirming that is all but signed (6 years). Expecting an announcement tomorrow.

This is great news. I hope Upton always wears Sedona Red. This is the first step.

I am still a little shocked that this is the deal.

If it is, Byrnes has earned his paycheck for the offseason.

I keep waiting to hear that it is 50 million for the rest of the arbitration years, with a couple options that would push it to 80 or 90 million.

I guess J-Up likes it here in AZ.

This is me all morning:

Let him sign this contract and not turn into Chris Young. Become the superstar you were born to be Justin.
