BAKURIANI, Georgia—The Georgian luger who died in a horrific training accident hours before the opening of the Vancouver Winter Olympics on Friday told his father he was terrified of the track before doing the run that killed him.

"He called me before the Olympics, three days ago, and he said, 'Dad, I'm scared of one of the turns,' " David Kumaritashvili said in an interview at his house in the small mountain town of Bakuriani on Sunday.

FULL STORY HERE

The video of the crash, for anyone who hasn't seen it, is widely available on the Internet. Nodar was thrown from his luge during a turn and his body and head slammed into an unpadded steel support post at 90 MPH. Why these support posts are unpadded is beyond me.

they should enclose the whole fricken course in plexy (sp) glass. should not be a complaint about the view b/c it is clear, but some fools will say it will take away from the drama b/c the risk factor is lower.... ask this kids father how he feels about a risk factor.

just like the tunnels that the kids play in at all the play grounds at the chuckie cheese and mcdonalds....

better off spinning inside the "tunnels" than flying off the course.

Did anyone watch hockey today? Jeremy Roenick is doing color commentary along with Mike Milbury, a classic dick. It's great watching the two barely contain their complete disdain for each other. USA looked pretty rusty in their 3-1 win over the Swiss. Canada looks great. Can't wait for the big games.

I watched the 1st period, had to leave for work. Other than the flukish goal the US scored, dare I say it was Swiss dominated? That game, with all do respect to the Swiss who are a rising, shows me no medal for USA. If they can barely beat the Swiss, what are they going to do against Russia or Canada or Sweden?

Watching Russia vs Latvia, its 2-0 Russia at the end of the 1st period.

My medal predictions:

Gold- Russia
Silver- Canada
Bronze- Sweden
4th- USA

This could be the worst run Olympics ever. So far:

1) Georgian athlete killed on an apparently unsafe luge course;
2) Olympic torch fails to raise from floor in Opening Ceremony;
3) Seating at the Snowboardcross events fails because of weather, and 28,000 tickets have to be refunded;
4) Reports that the ice at the pairs skating final was improperly prepared and was too soft;
5) The men's 500m speed skating event was delayed because of an ice preparation machine that liquified and/or gouged the ice;
6) Timing snafus during a woman's cross-country skiing event (later corrected)
7) 19 people injured when a barricade collapsed during a free Olympics concert last night.
Cool Bad weather messing with events (although that is beyond organizer's control, some suggest that the expected weather at some venues is about what they are getting, so location choice not so good)

And we are only in Day five! (Atlanta's Olympics almost looks good by comparison)

I didn't watch much of the pairs figure skating, but I saw a number of skaters fall. Competitors (?) have been complaining of soft ice in the curling venue as well. I love to watch curling. If I had been doing something productive this morning instead of watching curling, I'd have never heard this classic line from a female commentator: "In this sport, 5 inches is massive".

I prefer 12.7 centimeters...it just sounds more impressive.

Sweden is about to win 2-0 over Germany in Olympic mens Hockey. Germany looks like a minor league team compared to Sweden, I am really surprised its just 2-0

Slovakia and Czech Republic up next.

Bryzgalov is looking very good against Slovakia tonight. I wouldnt mind Russia winning the Gold if it meant Bryzgalov backstopped them to it. Bring us back a medal Byrz.

Bryz almost shut the Slovakians out. They scored with about 10 min left in the 3rd, tied at 1 in OT now. I dare say Russia has the advantage in the shootout, seems like most of the Coyotes overtime games have gone to shootouts this year so Byrz will be used to it.

Russia lost in a 7 round shootout. I didnt like how Bryz charged Stumpel, the first shooter or the failed poke check resulting in the final goal by Demitra.

Both hockey games today were classics.

That game gave me a new appreciation for the sport. The Ruskis were pouring it on physically. I'm glad I rooted for the right team. Whatever happened to the Ukraine? Confused

The Ukraine did not qualify for the Olympics, the only year (of NHL participation) they have done so was 2002. In 1998, Japan sent a team. Italy and France have also played Olympic hockey. 1998 was the first year that NHL players were allowed to participate rather than amatuer players.

Dang, I was going to record the Russia game but decided against it. That's awesome. US currently sits atop the standings, but the Canada game will be huge on Sunday. I fully expect Canada to win, but if the US can win they'll have the best path to the medal round.
