What a great signing, esp, after those meh relievers. Getting cheap depth in the middle infield is huge, compared to last year where we had Lopez and nothing. Now if we can just add some depth to first and the rotation.

Based on Bill James' 2010 hitter projections, all the Diamondbacks have managed to do is replaced Ryan Roberts with... well, Ryan Roberts.

Ryan Roberts-
AVG / OBP / SLG / OPS
.275 .356 .428 .784

Kelly Johnson-
AVG / OBP / SLG / OPS
.274 .354 .445 .799

Ryan Roberts

Kelly Johnson

Except that Kelly Johnson averaged .282/.362/.451/.813 for two years in a pitchers park before he was allegedly hurt last year. I'm pretty sure James isn't projecting him in Chase, and isn't adjusted for injuries, so Kelly has some serious upside. If his off year was caused solely by that hand injury, my guess is he could something like a .290/.375/.470/.840 playing in Chase & the NL West.

Ryan Roberts played his only MLB season in a hitters park and is a year and a half older. He's a career .278/.362/.441/.803 AAA hitter at ages 25-28, i.e. his peak years spent playing against much younger players. I think his season last year was flukish and don't expect him to repeat it.

Plus we have 25 year old Tony Abreu, a career .354/.392/.564/.956 AAA hitter at ages 22 & 24. Of course all of Abreu's AAA AB's were in the PCL slow pitch softball league, but it is still a huge difference when adjusted for age.

I was going to post that in the other thread, but BOND had already posted some twitter stuff about the signing.

It just became finalized now:

I didn't realize JB has been trying to get him since 2005.

Why, did he start out as a middle reliever?

Having Johnson under control (even as a 3rd year arb) is a nice bonus. I think the signing on its own will work out well. He is a better bet than Roberts to put up those numbers, but I am not convinced that this and 2 mediocre relievers are the way to spend near 8M.

So with Tony Abreu being pretty awful so far, and Kelly Johnson still under team control next year, what is the likelihood he will be traded?

I'm not an expert on what stats are indicative of sustaining year to year. But I know a spike in numbers like HR don't usually stay.

I'd actually push to have him stay on the team. He's been someone the FO has wanted for years (even though that FO is now de facto dead), and they aren't exactly crawling in hot 2B prospects.

He even got got on base when he was hit by a pitch - talk about a special cycle...

Then again, other two guys who hit for the cycle this year - Jody Gerut and Bengie Molina.

It really takes a talented player to do it... Laughing

D-backs Kelly Johnson drawing interest
Quote:
Not surprisingly, Diamondbacks second baseman Kelly Johnson is drawing the most interest on the trade market now that Dan Haren is gone, major league sources say.

The D-Backs would “have to be overwhelmed” to trade right-hander Edwin Jackson, a source said, because the team envisions newcomer Joe Saunders, Jackson and Ian Kennedy as the top three in their rotation in 2011.

The interest in Johnson makes sense. Johnson, on his way to a career year in his first season with the D-Backs, is a marketable commodity because he not only brings production to a non-power position but also could be more than a two-month rental.

With a year of arbitration remaining, Johnson can be controlled for a decent price in 2011. He is making an affordable $2.35 million this season, and even with a bump to the $4 million range in 2011 provides value. That also makes him valuable to the D-Backs, of course.

Because of Johnson's affordability, the Diamondbacks are unlikely to move him simply for salary relief -- as they appear to be willing to do with a number of their more-pricey players, such as Adam LaRoche, Chris Snyder and Chad Qualls. They remain in the market for young pitching prospects and bullpen help.

One possible match for Johnson could be the Dodgers, who have a need at second base. The Dodgers traded Abreu to the Diamondbacks last year in order to acquire pitcher Jon Garland for the stretch run.

#### that, we all know they get overwhelmed by anything. That means shit. The Front Office is a mess.
