Anyone know why Murphy quit? It's too bad because he was finally getting (and keeping) players who could star in the majors. Three of his four CWS appearances were in the last 5 years.

And I do think never winning a CWS is a blemish on his record at ASU.

Something is wrong with this picture. I don't see Murphy just resigning from ASU baseball unless he was forced to. Seems strange to me. Either way i hope we can bring in another good coach and finally win that damn CWS.

That was my thought. I thought (gut feeling no hard evidence) that there was something with the players being paid on summer jobs, but every sportscaster/writer said there was nothing there. Maybe a commentary on the quality of the media in the valley (Nick excepted of course).

I keep wondering if something is up, too. Even if Murphy was upset with the administration, the timing for leaving is wrong. You would expect him to wait until after the season when there will be other jobs he could presumably have. Right now, he has nothing, and he doesn't look that great quitting at this point in the pre-season. Maybe he just wanted to leave, but it sure seems strange.

There's still a lot we don't know here. If there were recruiting violations by the coaching staff, Love had to can Murphy for the good of the program. Sounds like Murphy is splitting hairs about how he left, but again, we don't know the whole story.

Not only the baseball program, but the entire sports program could be in jeopardy. At least ASU (tied with SMU) is number one in something.

I can see how Murphy would be a tough one to control especially given his bad relationship with Love.

I guess I learned that Ice Miller found the violations to be "no problem" La Cava's words). I have not seen the Ice-Miller report. I could not finished it on the internet. If La Cava has it, he should share.

This is also contrary to the reports from the NCAA notice that detailed:

" More than 500 impermissible telephone-recruiting calls were made over five years.

The NCAA limits the number of calls to a recruit. It alleges that these 500 calls went undetected because the university failed to monitor recruiting efforts.

The university failed to monitor the activities of managers and non-coaching staff over three years. The NCAA says the university was notified that some staffers had engaged in improper coaching activities in 2007 but continued to fail to monitor them.

The baseball program committed violations over four years in its relationship with Athlete's Performance, a Phoenix-based sports-training company. The NCAA alleged that the university failed to monitor the relationship and the company's staff.

The notice of allegations also indicates issues related to PTM Programs for Youth, a non-profit started by Murphy to introduce baseball to children and the employment of student-athletes."

I also learned that Murphy think the Padres are contenders in the West. Is he in a total dream world?

Yep Gary got it. Someone told me it was going to get brought up in the current NCAA case but I later found out no. Sad

I am an ASU fan, but that doesn't lessen my curiosity about Murphy. He has had much greater success in recent years on the field. He seemed to be getting blue chip players (until Either, his top player in the majors was Willie Bloomquist).

http://www.baseball-almanac.com/college/arizona_state_university_baseball_players.shtml

There has been talk about the paying of players; improper pratcices; players living in homes owned by Murphy as well as the improper recruiting. It is my understanding that very few full scholarships are awarded so so sort of quid pro quo would be rationale. None of these speculations seem minor. They are borne out the the stories as to the NCAA's charges. Even if they were all within in the rules, when you are paying players and having out of season practices, I think you need to be fully documented and fully clean.

I doubt if we will ever know, but the coverup starting from day 1 of Murphy's resignation just adds fuel to the fire. If Murphy has been cheated, let's hold Lisa Love (who I don't like either) or the proper party accountable.

I hear ya. I have always liked Murph. Hell he's a Bruce fan. This whole thing saddens me.

Also put me in the camp that hates Lisa Love. Would like for us to someday snag that Mizzou guy Mike Alden who has ties here for the AD job.

If the kitty kats were smart they would be after him. Wink

The problem is that the whole athletic program is in jeopardy. This would be the second "lack of institutional control" violation.

With USC in trouble, they could take it out on ASU. The general NCAA policy is that when when a Oklahoma cheats, they suspend a Clevland State.* Maybe ASU is big enough to avoid the fall out, but I am still troubled.

*I was tryng for a "When Paris sneezes, Europe catches a cold" line here, but couldn't make it work.

Pat Murphy shares his feelings about his removal ("an injustice") and the Sun Devils' CWS run. http://bit.ly/cCWrD3

Eff him. Injustice my ass. The guy has put ASU in danger of program crippling sanctions.
