Interesting quiz. I guess I should have realized it was a quiz from an MLB perspective. I kinda answered from a youth baseball perspective (since I'm coaching now).

I got a 64% but I would have done better had I gone with my gut on 3 of the questions (my gut instinct would have been the right answer).

I got 11 right out of 14. Apparently I'm a pretty good baserunner. If only I could actually run...

12/14. Missed the one about what part of a pitcher's body a runner on 1st should watch (I said arm Embarassed ), and I said a runner on 3rd should lead off in foul territory and return to the base in foul territory (apparently, you're supposed to go back in fair territory--seems like returning in foul territory would make it easier to avoid a tag...).

I had the same score and missed this one and as well. I think you go back in fair territory so that the throw form the catcher is harder.

It looks like some one from the Dbacks gave the other question that I missed. This one was if you are on second and one out what should be your primary goal. I said to score.

My understanding of the rules is that scoring should always be your primary goal on offense. The question said to get to third base in which case the Dbacks accomplished that goal a lot more than scoring. How could we possibly have done so poorly when we accomplished our primary goal of getting to third base?

Nick Punto thought so too.

1. Punto did not score

2. He did not even try to score

3. He was thrown at third base

You may not always be able to accomplish your primary objective and you can't be stupid, but your goal still should be to score.

In fact, if your primary objective is to get to third when you are on second with one out, why does another question discourage tagging up with one out.

I did the same as Stu on this.

The one about 2B is dumb.

Perhaps additional angles would be helpful here.

I got 11/14. Missed the stupid one about the objective on second base, the one about returning to third (although when I run the bases, I always do make myself big and I figure thats why you go back in fair territory), and the one about going from 1st to 3rd (still not clear on that one).

I just took that one to mean that you absolutely must advance, but don't run into an out trying to score. Get to third, so that you can score on a fly ball.

I almost blew that one--I had "always check the 3B coach as you're approaching 2nd" checked, and was ready to move on, but thought I should at least check the other options. The idea is that if the ball is hit to right, the runner can't really follow the play and be turning toward third at full speed at the same time, so he has to check the coach. If the ball is in front of him in left, he can still see what's going on, so he doesn't need the coach's help at that point.

Haha. Now it makes sense! Thank you. Its still a little weird because "Look to the third-base coach mostly on balls hit to right field" is worded a little poorly IMO, but at least I get it now.

I missed two as well, including the one Stu references here as well. Why consider 2nd base as being in "scoring position" if your goal is only to get to third base??? Damn underachieving baserunners Wink

Maybe, like me, you missed some due to misreading the question. My reading comprehension skills are clearly on the decline. I was *railing* about the stupidity of the right answer on the one about when to advance from 2d to 3d -- it seemed the exact opposite of what you would want a runner to do. Then, one little word was pointed out to me.

"hit to his left"

Yes, that is very different from "hit to left," isn't it?

My mental conception of a baserunner and a ground ball and when you would run and when you wouldn't was correct, at least. I just answered the questions too quickly and didn't check my work before handing it in.

I actually did get the one about the goal of the runner on second, simply because I figured 3d base is a prerequisite to scoring, even if you do get 3d and then home plate on the same play, so obviously getting to 3d is primary, right? Wink

79%. Base running always was my strong suite in Little League. Though I can honestly say I never thought about any of that stuff.

I couldn't find a better thread to put this in, my apologies TAP.

What would happen if EB22 were commissioner...
