It's been a long time, since about December or January, that I heard about the Hawaiian Leagues contract and the possibility of moving the league to Phoenix.
Since then, I have run across a single article saying how this might be put together, or even if it will for sure be put together.
Does anyone here know anything, or have some thoughts on the matter?
I know it's not October yet - but if this thing is happening, shouldn't we be hearing about it?

Thanks for your thoughts / info.

Since there were 90 others looking in here, I figured some people might be interested.
The coaches have been picked (no big HOF names this year)
and,

Quote:
There was talk that when the AFL season started on Oct. 13 (running through Nov. 21), there would be a new addition along with it. When Hawaii Winter Baseball closed its doors following its 2008 season, discussions began about moving it -- a junior AFL, so to speak -- to Arizona. The idea was to have a league for lower-level, A-ball prospects to run in conjunction with the very successful AFL. For a number of reasons -- the economy, for one -- plans didn't come together in time for this year, but all signs point to the junior AFL debuting a year from now.

"It's not going to occur here in 2009, but we are very optimistic we can launch a junior fall league in 2010," Cobb said. "We are certainly going to put together a steering committee of farm directors and do our very best to roll the projected expenses into the 2010 budget. We are optimistic we will be able to get it off the ground and operative in 2010."

There's also going to be 2 A ball exemptions this year.
Next step, position draft Smile
(followed by speculation discussions, which I'm looking forward to)

Looks like the Diamondbacks are back with the Scottsdale Scorpions this year, which is good news for me and TAP.

Here's a look at their preliminary roster.

Use the drop-down bar on the top-right portion of the page if you're interested at looking at some of the other rosters. The early list of players has wowed me. Calling this year's league talent laden doesn't do it justice. Here's a quick look at some of the notables.

From the D-Backs:
- Bryan Augenstein, RHP
- Cesar Valdez, RHP
- Brandon Allen, 1B
- Pedro Ciriaco, MI
- Collin Cowgill, OF

Notables from the rest of the league:
- Stephen Strasburg, RHP WAS
- Buster Posey, C SF
- Domonic Brown, OF PHI
- Matt Dominguez, 3B FLA
- Josh Vitters, 3B CHC
- Mike Stanton, OF FLA
- Phillippe Aumont, RHP SEA
- Dustin Ackley, 1B SEA
- Carlos Truinfel, SS SEA
- Dayan Viciedo, 3B CHW
- Andrew Lambo, OF LAD
- Mike Minor, LHP ATL
- Evan Scribner (aka the reliever we traded for Tony Clark's return), RHP SD
- Jason Castro, C HOU
- Yonder Alonso, 1B CIN
- Freddie Freeman, 1B ATL
- Jason Heyward, OF ATL
- Drew Storen, RHP WAS
- Jemile Weeks, 2B OAK
- Mike Moustakas, 3B KC
- Jose Tabata, OF PIT

Sorry. That got a bit lengthy. It's still only about half of the people on the list of notables I've made in my head Smile

There are still spots listed as TBA, but I believe they're for pitchers... I could be wrong, though.

He has more than one year accumulated MLB service time so he is not eligible

This is true as a technical rule, but the team can talk to the league if they want Conor to play in the AFL. That's how they got Scherzer in last year.

Nick Piecoro / The Arizona Republic tonight wrote:
Triple-A outfielder Cole Gillespie, who came to the Diamondbacks from Milwaukee in the Felipe Lopez trade, will play in the Arizona Fall League. Gillespie will take the place of Class A outfielder Collin Cowgill. The club opted to make the change because Gillespie is closer to the majors, and it did not have room in the majors to get him at-bats this month.

Unfortunate for Cowgill, but he was drafted just last year. He has plenty of time, whereas Cole, with the progress he has made this year, should be getting his first cup of coffee next season.

I was at the Mesa/Phoenix game today. Random observations... Chris Marrero hit a bomb to left-center that cleared the advertisement, which is probably 20ft high. Mike Stanton has Mark Reynolds like ability (to not layoff anything with 2 strikes on him). Other prospects who played were Conger, Dominguez, Weeks, Loewen (sun ate him up on one fly ball) and a couple of Twins. Pitchers pretty much sucked. Great to see so many prospects in just the first of many AFL games this year. Looking forward to more.

Oh, and I saw Strasburg in the dugout. I'm hoping to see him in his 2nd start.

Was at Scottsdale Stadium this evening through the 6th inning. Sat next to Donnie Veal behind the plate who was keeping score tonight, and enjoyed good conversation with SheriffWannaBe and others.

Was hoping to see more from Brandon Allen in his ABs. Scott Maine had a rough night, hitting two batters and walking three others in just 2/3 of an inning pitched. He was wild all over the place, high, low, inside, outside. Jason Heyward from the Braves organization is a flat out stud.

Rotoworld.com this morning wrote:
Cole Gillespie reaches five times in AFL game

Cole Gillespie, one of two prospects the Diamondbacks picked up from the Brewers for Felipe Lopez this summer, went 3-for-3 with two walks Wednesday for the Saguaros of the AFL.

Gillespie improved his stock by hitting .304/.418/.514 in 42 games for Triple-A Reno after the trade. He should certainly be hoping the Diamondbacks decide to give Eric Byrnes his release this winter. He still probably wouldn't be a candidate to make the team, but it'd put him in position to be called up the first time an outfielder goes down.

Well, except that Cole and his Diamondbacks teammates play for the Scorpions, not the Saguaros. Confused

For more accurate details on last night's game, here's Danny Wild's report:

Gillespie, Scorpions strike in 10th
D-backs prospect reaches in all five plate appearances

The Evan Scribner that's mentioned in the second paragraph is the prospect that Arizona traded to San Diego in exchange for Tony Clark in July 2008.

He is a big dude - just dwarfs some of his teammates. Big wide shoulders.

Anyone going? I get off work at 6 and I'm just down the road. Hopefully, there won't be a huge line for tickets.

I was going to go, but I have standardized testing tomorrow morning. I am opting to stay home and study instead. Hopefully I will get to see him in another start before the end of the AFL season.

The kid is blessed with some talent. I was very impressed, as was everyone there. Hope he stays healthy and has a great career. Allen had a nice walk against him. With 2 strikes, balls 3 and 4 were close enough to swing at, but Allen took them.

Keith Glab / FutureBacks.com today wrote:
Saturday's 9-5 loss to the Peoria Javelinas was one that Arizona Diamondbacks pitching prospects Bryan Augenstein and Cesar Valdez would like to forget. The two right-handers combined to allow all nine of the Javelinas' runs in two-plus innings of work.

Bryan Augenstein allowed four earned runs on five hits in 1.2 innings of work. Cesar Valdez relieved his fellow D-backs prospect and stranded an inherited runner at first base. Valdez would not record another out in the game, however, as six straight batters reached against him, five of which would eventually score.

Neither pitcher throws particularly hard, so Valdez did not provide a change of pace from what Peoria hitters saw from Augenstein. Moreover, Valdez was relying upon his fastball far more often than usual despite the fact that his changeup and curveball are both superior pitches. That lack of variety in pitch selection proved costly.

Three D-backs prospects did appear in the Scottsdale starting lineup and contribute. Cole Gillespie reached base twice and Brandon Allen coaxed three walks. Second baseman Pedro Ciriaco really had a good day. As the Scorpions' leadoff hitter, Ciriaco walked, singled twice, and doubled. He scored two runs and drove in two others, accounting for four of Scottsdale's five runs.
