The team is performing admirably. They are playing tough, keeping the games close and interesting for the fans, but always putting in that extra effort to make sure it ends up in the Loss column. Last nights was very special. Harper may not be that far away.

I don't know why everyone's so hot on drafting a guy who most likely wouldn't sign with Arizona. The kid worships the Yankees. Confused

And that's a major character flaw in my book.

Agreed.

But I don't think there's anything to worry about. The Diamondbacks season, in the end, will receive the same assessment as was given by the wife of a guy who tried to commit suicide, but failed: "There's another thing he couldn't do right..."

of course he'll sign with us. It's a guaranteed $5m+, and if he sits out a year he won't get any more. Instead he'll risk scouts finding flaws that drop him and cost millions. Either way, he isn't getting drafted by the Yankees. His fastest path to pinstripes is to sign next year and be a 25 year old FA.

Update on baseball's two worst teams:

Nationals won today, Diamondbacks lost. One game closer to the prize.

All three contenders have lost 8 of their last 10 games. This is serious competition!

any word on if strasburg is close to signing?

now if he does not sign the top of the draft in 2010 could have harper and strasburg...... Shocked

i heard that the nats would get the #2 pick as comp. if they cant sign him. is this true?

could they go harper and than take strasburg again (are they allowed to take the player that they could not sign the year before?)

Yes

They would need Strasburg's consent, which of course is highly unlikely.

And just because its the nature of this thread, I will predict that we hold the #8 pick in the 2010 draft.

If Strasburg fails to sign this year, it will be interesting to see if his intentions are to get himself drafted by his local San Diego Padres.

Besides the potential for Stras to be there, Harper and Jameson Taillon are the prospects at the top of my list for next year. It seems like it's going to be a decently solid draft class.

Arizona's 2nd half surge has taken them out of contention for the Bryce Harper sweepstakes and I'm just fine with that. Keep winning, guys! Razz

I currently attend school with Taylor Lindsey, so this year should be interesting, what with scouts and all coming by. It would be interesting if the D-backs took him in the supplemental or 2nd/3rd round...

It's weird, I did a quick google search on young Mr. Lindsey and I found a copy of his high school transcript. He's no brainiac, that's for sure.

The D-backs have really pulled it together lately. I expect them to finish the year on an upswing, and end up with pick 10-15. There's still a lot of season left...

Just noticed that the team is 10-21 when facing a LHP... Ouch.

That's because the only two RH bats who can do anything are JU and MR.
RR had a nice night and has been quite good since FL was jettisoned to MIL.
The DB really need CJ back next year...

While DC and KC are dukin it out for 1-2 in the draft, AZ is quietly only 3.5 back of the #3 spot...

You know you suck when you are terrible team to start, but then have a winning streak to stay away from the top pick in the draft.

You guys think if the team could get to 3rd overall they could get into the Jameson Taillon sweepstakes? Would be a hell of a consolation prize.

If AZ plays its final 20 games like it has its last 10 (1-9)?

Yes.

We're only 5.5 games off the #2 spot, with 4 teams between us.

#2. PIT (55-86) - ---
#3. KC (57-86) - 1.0
#4. BAL (58-84) - 2.5
#5. CLE (61-81) - 5.5
#6. ARZ (62-82) - 5.5

LET'S GO: PIT/KC/BAL/CLE!!!!

The Orioles have 20 games left. They play teams with a winning record 12 times, though 8 of those is against the .500 Rays. Cleveland and Baltimore play each other the weekend of the 24th.

The Indians have 20 games left. (if you say the Twins and WS have winning records) they play 7 games against non contenders.

The Royals play 19 more. Non against non contenders (a majority of that is Minn and CHWS)

The Pirates have 21 games left, play the LAD twice. Under .500 teams 10 times.

We play 18 more. We could play spoliers to SF. The 2 Padres series is the only series that we play against under .500 teams.

I know this is drastcally flawed in that I am counting TB, Twins and WS as over .500. I think we have a chance to sneak into 3rd or 4th. Especially if Baltimore could beat up on Cleveland later this month (though we would have to take the Padres series).

The 2014 season looks promising.

With the Dbax loss and the Mets win, the 2 clubs are now tied for the 6th worst record heading into the final game. Anybody know what the tiebreaker would be if they finished with identical records?
