It's a three-way race to the wire. After watching today's game and the entire series and... well, I think the Diamondbacks have a real shot.

The now infamous Power Showcase Finals youtube video. He actually broke the record for longest HR in Tropicana Field on the one that almost took the 'A' out of 'TROPICANA', for those who don't know.

We HAVE to get Harper! We all know we need good trade bait for another shitty middle reliever. (broken hand optional)

Nick Piecoro / The Arizona Republic tonight wrote:
We sort of half-seriously suggested the Bryce Harper sweepstakes last week, but after watching the Diamondbacks create new ways to lose this weekend in Seattle, we're beginning to think it might be possible for them to end up with the worst record in baseball.

If they do, they likely would have a chance at landing Harper, a Las Vegas high school catcher who for now is being called the best amateur position player prospect since Justin Upton. According to some, Harper, at age 16, is more advanced than Upton was at the same age.

Harper, who recently was on the cover of Sports Illustrated, reportedly has enrolled in junior college and plans to take his GED in hopes of becoming draft eligible a year early.

As we sit here this evening, the Diamondbacks are 29-41. The Washington Nationals are the worst team in baseball at 20-47. Cleveland is one game worse in the loss column than the Diamondbacks at 29-42.

There’s still a lot of season left, and it seems hard to believe that this collection of players is the worst in baseball. But it also is hard to believe the Diamondbacks could lose today’s game in the fashion we saw.

Who knows. There’s not much reason to think Brandon Webb will return this year. And if the Diamondbacks end up trading off parts and if the Nationals continue to get better pitching -- they had a four-game win streak snapped today -- Arizona could have a shot at the top pick in next year’s draft.

Only way he ends up in our org is if Washington decides they don't want to break the bank 2 years in a row and we somehow continue to suck our way into the #2 spot.

If you're going to suck you might as well suck bad enough to get the number one pick. Go D'backs!

I'm all for the boom/bust mentality in sports. If you're going to lose, lose productively. 2004 gave us Upton. I could handle that again if it meant another phenom talent.

I'd rather lose gloriously than scratch and claw our way into the middle of the pack.

Something that you all may or may not know about the school he is joining...

College of Southern Nevada is part of the SWAC conference in the NJCAA. That conference is known for using wooden bats in conference play. Maybe that possibly factored into his decision...

The Indians have lost one more game then us, but there is too much baseball left to even think too much about a one game lead. As it stands now the top five contenders in the sweepstakes are as follows in rank order-

1. Nationals
2. Indians
3. D'Backs
4. Kansas City
5. Pittsburgh

The Nats are currently 15 games AHEAD of us in the sweepstakes and the other teams are pretty closely bunched together with us. If we end up moving Lopez, Garland and Davis we might catch up a bit with the Nats but it will be extremely tough to catch them. Harper is worth giving it one hell of a try though.

Sending Whitesell down for Clark was a good start. Bat Tony cleanup every day to keep him sharp.

Start Eric in LF in the 2-spot every day. He's our face and he deserves the tumbling... I mean the playing time.

Pull someone in from the bullpen during the 4th inning of each game to keep our starters fresh.

I'm telling you we've got a real shot here.

Harper has already said he wants to be a Yankee eventually.

Quote:
When asked about his goals as a ballplayer, he replies, "Be in the Hall of Fame, definitely. Play in Yankee Stadium. Play in the pinstripes. Be considered the greatest baseball player who ever lived. I can't wait."

At 16 my goals were to live to graduate, start a rock band and to go to college and score with as many girls as possible. Contrast and compare.

Some kids baseball tourney being played here in the valley and lots of kids from all over out at the ballpark tonight.

I talked to the team from Vegas and they say this kid is so overated.

Like I said another Bruce Hardy.

I'm not sure other kids would be the best judge of character. I'm guessing there's a lot of jealousy going on there. However, if there's a hole in his swing, it'll be found right quick at the next level(s).

It was adult coaches too but I agree about the jealousy. Who knows if this kid is going to make it but if I had to bet I would bet no.

I remember Bruce Hardy as a HS QB on the cover of SI. I loved the kid and used to give Frank Kush crap about moving him to TE. Best move ever for the kid as he had a nice career in the NFL as a TE for the Dolphins.

In the SI article I don't really recall much mention of any teammates or coaches. I got the impression that he keeps to himself and doesn't endear himself to others. He seemed to be different than other high school kids. Reminded me of that Albert Pujols commercial--The Machine.

But hey the kid is clearly a special kind of talent so I'm pretty much in favor of selling guys off and punting this year because why would you want to suck the big one and not at least get something for it.

As the great Ricky Bobby once said, "If you ain't first, you're last."
