I'm pretty sure the owners will give JB all the money he needs to sign these two draft picks.

Lets hope so, Lev, this farm system seriously needs a boost and signing players like Borchering, Owings and Schuster would be a great step.

Borchering UNSIGNED -- Dont worry about this one. He will get a little bit over slot money and baseball does not like overslot signings to be announced before the deadline as they think it shapes the market not in their favor.

Owings UNSIGNED -- This one I dont know about Confused

Nick Piecoro / The Arizona Republic tonight wrote:
Diamondbacks scouting director Tom Allison would like nothing more than to have news on his top pick, third baseman Bobby Borchering but instead said negotiations are in a holding pattern.

"It's kind of been 'hurry up and wait' so far," Allison said. "It's a matter of wait and see."

The Diamondbacks have offered Borchering, the No. 16 overall pick out of a Fort Myers, Fla., high school, a deal that includes a $1.5 million signing bonus. The club gave outfielder A.J. Pollock, the No. 17 overall pick, a $1.4 million bonus last month.

Allison noted that waiting to sign until the deadline - which this year is Aug. 17 - has become the rule rather than the exception.

"It's the process more than the player or the adviser," he said. "Only 12 guys in the first round have signed and it's July 24. That's the reality. And the guy it hurts the most is the high school position player."

Allison would like Borchering to be getting experience in rookie ball in advance of his first full season next year in Class A.

"These are at-bats you can't get back," he said.

Allison said negotiations also are ongoing with shortstop Chris Owings, the No. 41 overall pick out of a South Carolina high school. Owings has been offered $815,000.

It took longer than expected, but the result was the same -- South Carolina baseball signee Chris Owings will accept his draft position and bypass college.

"We made a decision a couple of days ago," Owings said on Thursday afternoon. "I've decided to go pro."

Owings, the highest-drafted member of the Gamecocks' class of 2010, was picked 41st overall by Arizona.

Owings will fly to Phoenix's Chase Field on Monday and formally sign his contract at a ceremony. Then he'll immediately depart for the Diamondbacks' rookie-league team in Missoula, Mt.

All that leaves is Borchering now, correct?

If he signs, this draft would have to be deemed a short term success?

Ever since the Federals came down and raided all the cows and hogs, stole up all them hens, burned down the crop field, and killed the family hunting dog, it really has been tough to find some positives on the Levski farm, hasn't it? Wink

(Is it too soon for Civil War humor? Smile )

When you can throw Cicero and Cato jokes around, then we'll talk.

I would like to see Helm and Schuster added, but the draft would be good for me if they can get Borchering signed.

Quote:

The No. 41 overall pick in June’s Major League Baseball draft will fly to Phoenix to sign his contract, which will include a $950,000 bonus. He will report Wednesday to the Missoula (Mont.) Osprey, the Diamondbacks’ affilate in the rookie-level Pioneer League, which plays through Sept. 11.

His bonus ended up being significantly above the $820,000 slotted for the 41st pick.

I think Borchering will also sign.
The delay is just a tactic, i guess, to squeeze more money.

The Borchering delay is just a necessary evil of the 1st round. DBacks have to wait it out to see how much money the picks around him are signing for.

Only 4 of the top 16 picks have signed so far... once more of these guys start signing giving the teams, agents, and players a better picture you'll see a slew happen together.

Excellent news, now lets get the the top three of Borchering, Schuster and Helm signed up and we'd have had a good draft.

It could be the D-Backs and Borchering have already agreed to a deal. Most teams are waiting until the deadline to announce the deal because they will be over slot and Bud doesn't like it. I have no doubts Borchering will be a D-Back by the 17th.

Mostly repeat info - but Callis' report on Owings signing.

Quote:
A South Carolina recruit, Owings was one of the best shortstops in the draft. He has offensive tools and the ability to stay at shortstop, and he drew comparisons to a less powerful version of 2008 White Sox first-rounder Gordon Beckham. Owings was the fourth of Arizona’s five selections before the second round.

Owings got a bonus of $950,000 so it seems he got about $135,000 more then the recommended bonus but that is probably not too bad considering we knew that he would be a tough sign with a fairly strong commitment to go to college.

Id think that the likes of the Pirates who paid $1.1 million for an eight rounder or the Royals who are paying over $2 million for a fourth rounder are bound to get into a bit of trouble with the commisioners office.
