Former Lakeland High athlete Keon Broxton, who was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks last week in the MLB draft, has signed with the team, according to his college coach.

Johnny Wiggs of Santa Fe Community College said Broxton signed earlier this week with Arizona for about $400,000 and is on his was out west to begin camp. Broxton was a third-round pick after spending one season at Santa Fe

14th round pick also signed

Quote:

Greer, a junior at West Carolina University, who received a $30,000 bonus in exchange for his signature. The agreement also included the cost of school.

Greer also flew out to Arizona, inking his deal with the Diamondbacks Monday.

"I was really ready to go. It wasn't a bad process at all," Greer said. "It's exciting and obviously a job—a job with many, many hours on the field."

7 216 Matt Helm 3B Hamilton HS, Chandler, Ariz. Ariz.

Nice story by Richard Obert in the Tempe Republic today. Not sure if a link exists.

Looks like the DBACKS plan on watching him play Connie Mack summer ball to see how he responds coming back from knee and ankle injuries.

Sounds like he would sign if DBACKS offer enough money to cover college. If not he is headed to the UofA. Look for something near the deadline.

On Tuesday, shortstop David Narodowski officially signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks after being drafted in the 15th round (456 overall) of last week’s amateur draft.

Not sure what the signing Bonus was.

From the St Petersburg Times...

http://www.tampabay.com/sports/baseballpreps/article1010769.ece

Holy hardware: The postseason accolades continue pouring in for ex-Mitchell High left-hander Patrick Schuster, a University of Florida signee drafted in the 13th round by the Diamondbacks.

Since the draft, Schuster has been chosen as Florida's Mr. Baseball, has been one of 85 players named to the Louisville Slugger High School All-America team, and has been named the National High School Coaches Association's 2009 Senior Athlete of the Year for baseball.

On Tuesday, Schuster, drafted lower than he projected, said via text message that he still hasn't made a decision on his future. When asked if the Diamondbacks have come close to the undisclosed signing bonus Schuster is seeking, he replied, "They're digging deep to find it but not yet."

Nick on the draft

Quote:
So far, 3B Matt Davidson (No. 35, $900,000) and LF Marc Krauss (No. 64, $550,000) are the only Day 1 draft picks who have signed. It sounds like they remain close to finalizing deals with CF A.J. Pollock (No. 17) and LHP Mike Belfiore (No. 45).

As far as negotiations with the likes of LHP Patrick Schuster, it might have to wait until the higher picks are done.

Schuster, the club’s 13th-round pick, was expected to go in rounds two or three but ended up slipping, in part because he made it clear he wanted to paid like a second- or third-rounder. The Diamondbacks like him a lot, but signing him might have to wait.

“We took them with the intentions of trying to sign them,” General Manager Josh Byrnes said. “We’ll see where the higher guys come in and see where we are in relation to our budget.”

Schuster gained some fame for throwing four consecutive no-hitters, but the Diamondbacks say they liked him well before that. They say that if the draft had gone differently, there were scenarios in which they would have taken Schuster with one of their extra picks. But once he slipped out of the top rounds, they figured they could wait to draft him and still hope to sign him.

Though it’s not the best of comparisons these days, the Diamondbacks see some Dontrelle Willis in him: He’s got a funky delivery, a lower arm slot, a fastball in the 88-90 range that can touch 93. We’ll see if they can get him signed.

Some new signees...

From the Missoula website

Goldschmidt, Hagens lead new Osprey
Five picks in the first 20 rounds of draft lead Missoula in '09
By Ben Catley / Missoula Osprey

MISSOULA, MT - The Missoula Osprey, in conjunction with the Arizona Diamondbacks, announced more additions to the 2009 roster on Thursday. Included in the additions are 2009 6th round draft pick, pitcher Bradin Hagens; the D-Backs' 8th-round selection, first baseman Paul Goldschmidt, and their 9th-round selection, right-handed pitcher Chase Anderson.

Two other players selected in the 2009 MLB Draft by Arizona, shortstop David Narodowski (15th round) and right-handed pitcher Adam Worthington (20th round), will also be part of the Missoula roster this season.

The Diamondbacks have also assigned several players from their Dominican Summer League team, including pitchers Enrique Burgos, Eury De La Rosa and Sammy De Los Santos, catcher Raywily Gomez and shortstop Antonio Sepulveda.

Hagens is a promising right-hander who led Merced College to their first conference title in 23 seasons this past spring. The two-time All-Central Valley Conference pick posted a 9-1 record with a 3.77 ERA this past spring.

Goldschmidt, who could be one of the impact bats the D-Backs were seeking in the 2009 draft, was a two-time All-Southland Conference selection for Texas State, where he holds the single-season (1Cool and career (36) home run marks, plus led the Southland with 88 RBIs while hitting .354 and scoring 72 runs.

Goldschmidt earned third-team All-American honors from Collegiate Baseball and was named to the CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-American second team. Goldschmidt leaves Texas State after twice winning the school's Male Scholar Athlete of the Year.

Anderson bounced between the starting rotation and the bullpen for his early career at Oklahoma, but settled in this past season as an effective long-relief specialist. He posted a 3-1 won-loss mark in 2009, striking out 60 batters in 50 2/3 innings pitched. The right-hander, a former National Junior College Athletic Association All-Star, pitched three or more innings five times during the season, including a pair of five-plus inning stints.

Narodowski comes to the Osprey after having a stellar season at Kansas, where he was named Big 12 Newcomer of the Year. The Vancouver, British Columbia native hit .354 for the Jayhawks in 2009, with eight home runs, 19 doubles and 43 RBI. He also committed just three errors at shortstop in his last 17 games, and hit five home runs in the seven Kansas post-season contests.

Worthington progressed from being a closer as a freshman to becoming a vital part of the Illinois-Chicago starting rotation. The coaches in the Horizon League were impressed with Worthington enough to vote him the league's Pitcher of the Year, despite posting a 4-5 mark. Worthington finished with a 3.48 ERA and struck out 73 batters while walking just 21 in 93 innings of work. He helped the Flames win four Horizon League regular-season crowns, two tournament titles and make two NCAA appearances.

41 1236 Cade Kreuter 3B Hart HS, Newhall, Calif. Calif.

I wonder what our chances of signing Kreuter are. He sounds like a powerful third baseman with good defense but he has a commitment to play for his dad at USC which possibly is a large reason why he fell to the 41st rounds. Are there any precedents for this where the player decided against joining their dad's (or other relatives) college programme to go pro?

If I remember correctly back in 2006 we drafted Brett Anderson who was going to go play for his dad at Oklahoma St. but we were able to sign him for a good size bonus.

Yea, he was a 2nd round pick. You obviously feel better about paying a ton of money to a 2nd rounder than a 41st pick, but at least there is precedent.

Im pretty sure the team had a good idea that they were gonna sign Borchering by picking him in that slot and his demands are apparently not outrageous (somewhere around $2 million). Schuster would be a coup if we got him.

I really hope we can snag Chris Owings and Matt Helm as well who both could turn into real finds.

Loving the signing of both David Nick and Charles Brewer, everything thing i have heard about the two seems intriguing and by the sounds of it really good additions to our farm system.

Speculation has Pollack taking a physical in Phoenix on Monday, and then joining South Bend after the Midwest League All Star Game, which would be on Thursday at Fort Wayne.
