http://sports.yahoo.com/fantasy/blog/roto_arcade/post/Flames-Smother-Zona-s-Chris-Young-in-adoration

Quote:
So far in the regular season, the 60 percent-owned commodity has remained consistent at the plate. In 28 at-bats hitting primarily behind Mark Reynolds(notes), he's notched an uncharacteristic .321 BA with three homers and a position-leading 12 RBIs. Unfathomably, he's struck out just four times (14.3 K%), remarkable when considering his tree-destructive past (26.4 career K%). Granted it was against mostly weak competition (San Diego and Pittsburgh), but with terrific table-setters in front of him, banner numbers are attainable. Seriously.

Yes, the sample size is minute, but Young's initial results are certainly encouraging. He's always possessed the pedigree. In 2005, he was named White Sox Minor League Player of the Year. The outfielder's sharpened eye his walks percentage has steadily increased in three consecutive seasons is a significant evolutionary step.

Simply put: some players' developmental curves (e.g. Nelson Cruz(notes)) are steeper than others (e.g. Jason Heyward(notes)). With 1,725 at-bats under his belt, the 26-year-old could be on the precipice of a remarkable year, which really would be an unforeseen achievement. Just four weeks ago most drafters would've rather mud-wrestled a Komodo dragon.

Shotgun!

Ah, CY... You made me fall in love when the Dbacks traded for you... then you broke my heart repeatedly... and now you're asking for my adoration again? You cruel cruel cruel man...

But I'll be more than happy to jump on CY's bandwagon, and I'll ride on it through thick and thin and snow and sleet ... until he breaks my heart again. But hey, that's why we're fans... Embarassed

Trying to find positives in what is already looking like a dismal season. CY is now hitting .298 with 5 HR and 26 RBI (through 33 games). He's been a nice surprise for the team, given his struggles the past two seasons.

Sutton and Grace touched on it a bit last night, but I think it was still understated. He has significantly improved his pitch selection. Teams are drilling those low/away breaking pitches at him, that he swung and missed at so very often last year. This year though, he is holding up on those pitches, and is taking more walks. He's doubled the total walks at this point last year to this year.

Then again, his O-Swing% is up 2 points this year, so sample size be damned, I may just be blowing smoke.

I am absolutely thrilled at how far CY has come.
Now, I don't think he'll regain his "star" ceiling, but the Mike Cameron comparisons seem to become truer and truer every day.
He's already quadrupled his 2009 WAR.
His .348 BABIP makes me a bit nervous though...

He's making hard contact virtually every time he hits the ball.

Yes, but I don't think he can continue hitting the ball this hard for the rest of his career. Eventually, it'll normalize somewhat.

If he doesn't regress and keeps hitting the ball hard, I think he could be a .315 BABIP hitter. That means a .260 hitter, and with his improved walk rate, he'll have an OBP of about .330 or so. Pretty "meh," but okay for a glove-first CF. And definitely good for someone who was at the point where CY was last year...

I confess to being one of those that had lost faith and confidence in CY. But CY with a league avg OBP or better is a good player. I'm happy for him, and really hope he can maintain his success.

The organization should be rewarded for their faith and patience with him as well. A lot of teams would have cut bait last year.

Let's add up the reasons for the Club to have patience:

2010: $3.25M
2011: $5M
2012: $7M
2013: $8.5M
2014: $11M club option ($1.5M buyout)
Total Reasons: $25.25M

They had to give CY through the 2011 season to get right.
