Counting down the days to the season just so I can get into a summer routine of baseball, fishing , and work. My roommate use to post here but I no longer have any contact with him. I will post pics and all kind of other stuff.

I decided to try to project the 2009 Opening Day roster and came up with this:

Pitchers:

Eddie Romero
Wes Roemer
Jorge Perez
Daniel Schereth
Kyle Newby
Clay Zavada
Jason Uriquidez
Cesar Valdez
Chase Christianson
Barry Enright
Jose Marte

Position Players:

Greg Thomas
Evan Frey
Manuel Ferrer
Pedro Ciriaco
Pete Clifford
Ed Easley
Ricardo Sosa
Cyle Hankerd
Gerrado Parra
Mike Mee
Orlando Mercado
Mark Hallberg

Thoughts ? Seems like we have been waiting for ever to see Chase Christianson play here in Mobile. I was a lurker here all of last year and recently read that Aj Shappi's mom passed away this Nov. I believe she posted on here alot.

26 days until all returns to normal.

Great loss indeed. Here's the thread in her memory.

Rusty Ryal is currently on the roster. He is what 26? It would be nice for him to be at AAA, but he was not impressive from what I saw in the AFL. If Roberts and Wilson go to AAA, AA may be the spot for Ryal.

I'd like to see Para in AAA, but some more time AA is probably best for him and it seems there are a gazillion AAAA NRI outfielders in camp.

Took off Kyle Wright due to him being released.

Former Baybears Matt Green and Forrest Cory were also released

Is Mercado going to be there? That seems like a lot of catchers. It also seems like a low spot for Hester. Shouldn't they be moving him although I guess Mercado is the better prospect and I assume he will be at Reno.

Orlando Mercado will be the backup to Skelton in AA. Hester will be in Reno. Hallberg and Sanchez will play the middle. Outfielders will be Frey, Hankard, Parra, and Rahl. Clifford will be the utility guy.

That seems more in order with what I had thought the pecking order was among catchers. Is Mercado that bad of a defensive catcher? He has no power, but his OBP has been decent.

Your current/updated BayBears roster as of Sunday, April 5th:

Hector Ambriz
Bryan Augenstein
Vince Bongiovanni
Barry Enright
Cody Evans
Scott Maine
Kyler Newby
Daniel Schlereth
Daniel Stange
Matt Torra
Jason Urdiquez
Clay Zavada

Orlando Mercado
James Skelton

Bryan Byrne
Pedro Ciriaco
Mark Hallberg
Yunesky Sanchez
Ricardo Sosa

Peter Clifford
Evan Frey
Cyle Hankerd
Gerardo Parra
Chris Rahl

Early expectations: Ambriz, Schlereth, Stange, and Parra should be the first to move north in the organization. If Schlereth pitches strong here the first month and Show or Slaten falters early he could be called-up early, this kid is projected to shoot through the organization.

What's up with Torra. I thought he was moving along pretty good ayear ago.

Torra is doing fine. The trade of Brooks Brown opened up a starting job in AA for Torra and the organization decided to let him have more experience at that level.

I have some misgivings about both Ciriaco and Skelton being ready for this level. Skelton is just too small to be an everyday catcher at the big league level. If the plan is to make him the new Wilkin Castillo why start at AA?

I saw Ciriaco in Spring Training and he looks to be about 16. Good fastballs overpower him. He needs more time to mature physically. High A would have been a better fit.

Torra is 25 this year. He pitched extremely well last year AA. They brought him up to AA and he did OK with a 46k/19w in 78 ip. I'd like his k/ip to be better, but it wasn't at AA and it was his first time at AAA. Back to AA seems like a step back for him unless they have some questions about his confidence. At 25, I think he should be in AAA if he is on a major league track.

5.7K/9 doesn't really qualify for extremely well...

Then again, Torra might have a crack at the rotation once the Dbacks are done with their fire sale at the end of July...

Hence my comment: "I'd like his k/ip to be better". The ratio is still excellent. His era, FWIW, was great at AA. If they are sending him back to get a strikeout pitch, why bring him up last year?

Good question. Maybe they don't want him pitching in Reno?
With sub-6K/9 average, his K/BB better be excellent.

Unfortunately, the abuse in college really ruined him.
Real shame

Yet another reason for HS kids to sign with major league teams
And no matter what, they should never go to Rice

I am surprised Valdez is in AAA.

Former Baybears no longer with the organization:

Adam Howard, A.J. Shappi, Cesar Nicolas, and Frank Curreri

Shocked about Shappi.

Have you seen this thread?

What happened with Curreri? He had a friend defending him here a while back.

Nick Piecoro / The Arizona Republic Friday night wrote:
Good start to his Diamondbacks minor league career for C James Skelton: 2 for 3 with a double and two walks. RHP Matt Torra is back in Double-A because of what appears to be a numbers crunch, but he pitched fairly well to get the win. Scoreless outings from RHP Kyler Newby and LHP Daniel Schlereth. LHP Clay Zavada and RHP Daniel Stange each allowed a run. Oh, and looks like five solid plate appearances for OF Gerardo Parra. Maybe hes taking to heart some of those things the Diamondbacks want him to refine.

Also, regarding Newby: We accidently left him off a list of potential bullpen arms that could help at some point this season. He has a terrific minor league resume and impressed the major league coaching staff in spring training. He is on the radar.

Maybe Parra can work on refining his ability to stay on a base safely. In today's game against Huntsville he has been picked off 3 times! Twice off first and once off second.

A true Dback!
Scoring runs is not all that important.
