Going into yesterday with a 2-1 series deficit, and needing to win both games of a double header, the Toros walked off in the 11th to secure a place in the GBL Championship Series against the Calgary Vipers.

Quote:
Tucson rocked St. George ace Raymar Diaz for 4 runs, knocking him out of the game in the 4th frame with the Toros leading 4-1.

The Roadrunners battled back though, scoring twice in the 6th and once in the 7th to tie the game 4-4, a tie that would stand all the way into the bottom of the 11th. In the 11th Skip Adams and Junior Spivey both singled to left to open the inning. After Dustin Yount flew out to center, Centerfielder Lino Garcia stepped to the plate. A full 4 hours and 12 minutes after the second game began, and 6 hours and 9 minutes after the first action of the day, Garcia drilled an RBI walkoff single to left allowing Adams to slide in safely to seal the 5-4 win and Tucson’s spot in the GBL Championship Series in their inaugural season.

Ask Derrick Hall.

You know, Theres like 3 billboards down town advertising the Toros. One a few miles away from Hi Corbett. Were there any Sidewinders billboards? Not that I ever saw, if there was. I have seen commercials and free coupon things in the mail for the Toros, dont remmember seeing either for the Sidewinders. Maybe Zucker really did want his own personal team.

I do recall a billboard on I-10 just before Tucson promoting spring training during one of our spring training trips to the old pueblo.

Mon May 04, 2009 8:59 am If AZ loses its 2 games in LA and 2 games in SD this week and LA then wins its 2 games against the Nationals, we'll be 10.5 games out and hosting the worst team in baseball - the Nationals - this weekend with forecast calling for above 100 temps. We'll keep the violins out for you.

Found the real reason we had a crappy season Wink TAP, Harbinger of DOOM!

Wow, they must have used up all the other potential sites. Who wants to go to AZ in July? Unless you're indoors, but still.

The game will probably start at 7, like all Tucson games do. Forget I posted anything.

Yep. I covered that in one of the first posts in the thread Laughing Hes about 1/10,000,000th the player Robin was though. Lead hands at first.

I remmember a game last year where, in the same inning, he dropped 2 pretty routine throws by the 3B (only 1 run scored though).

He actually got released by his independent league team back in September.
I saw Junior play against the Schaumburg Flyers many moons ago.

He played in LF that day. Without question the worst defensive outfielder I have ever seen. It was embarrassing.

I think I saw one, and I've been here since March 2005.

I have lived in both towns (Phx metro area 89-92, 97-00, technically Glendale, Gilbert and Peoria) and it's like Tucson doesn't want to move forward on anything.

But given the mentality of folks in charge of runnings things down here (city council, mayor, Zucker (team only, but feel it represents the whole Tucson mentality sometimes), county, Chamber of Commerce), nothing surprises me.

I need to quit before I go too far offline, but it seems like very few people down here wanted the Sidewinders to succeed, but they're all over this Toros legacy, which makes no sense, because the original incarnation of the Toro's was a AAA team, not some bunch of washed up has-beens.

And before that gets taken wrong, I can understand completely playing for the love of the game, as I've been either player or manager in four different amateur leagues down here for the last three years.

I always tried to make 1 game a month for the Sidewinders. Not against going to see the Toros, but it's hard to get it into my schedule during the summer, and since their schedule last year, I just couldn't fit one game in.

Sorry for getting too far off there, but this town's leaders basically seem like they're trying to run off any and all reasons people would want to come to Tucson. Spring Training brings in big bucks...

I don't have attendance numbers for the Toros vs Sidewinders, but I can't imagine they did a whole lot better. I'm sure the advertising had something to do with it. Advertising isn't going to matter much to folks on this board, folks like us will seek out whatever teams are around, but the average non-sabermatrician and average non-junkie isn't going to search out what they don't know about.

I'll shut up now.

I asked Junior Spivey on Facebook if he planned on renewing with the Toros for this upcoming season. He said, "No way- terrible organization!"

Sadly, I am not at all surprised.

You got that right but its both good and bad. Idiots are in charge down here but its keeping people out which Im all for. Dont want Tucson to become a mini Phx.

Read in the paper this morning some idiot lady wants to sell Randolph Park to developers to pay off the city debt. The paper suggested they sell off Hi Corbett. Rolling Eyes

Who would they sell Hi Corbett to? Nobody who would want it would buy it, as the county already ran off the White Sox, so now go the Rockheads and DBacks.

I don't think Tucson will ever bcome a mini Phx. No reason to build southeast. It's just a matter of time before it's all filled in between, however.

I do agree with idiots being in charge Smile (I'm talking local here, folks)

AAA Tucson after all?

Portland Beavers (AAA, Padres) in need of temporary venue

Wouldn't that be something.

There was a definite good feel, for me anyway, of getting to see the next DBack players before they got there.

Won't be the same watching the Friar's up-and-comers, but it's better than nothing, I guess.
