I know this thread has been in here in awhile, but does it belong in the Farm section?

Just wondering, not demanding it be moved... Embarassed

Ok, I have 4 pages worth of stuff for you guys. Excited? I think Ill divide all this into 3 posts. I have some play by play stuff, some scouting reports and also stats from the ballgame.

I hadnt been to Hi Corbett before tonight in years. I dont know how long, though I know Ive been to Rockies ST games. I seem to remember there being a whole section of bleachers in foul territory by the foulpoles. I also was a bit surprised the park is not as big as I remember.

Saw a couple of regulars from the diamondback express there tonight. They didnt recognize me, or if they did they didnt say anything.

The San Diego Chicken was annoying. I thought he was supposed to be funny? Does he have to do that stuff while the game is going on? (his antics distracted the Chico 1st baseman early on in the game).

They had an honor guard, but they didnt say who it represented. Probably from DM I would guess.

There were news people all over the place. I saw some of the female reporters walking around the field in stiletto heels Laughing That gave me a laugh.

1st hit in franchise history: Dustin Yount, a single in the 1st.
1st HR: Andrea Marshall
1st run scored: Skip Adams
1st RBI: Lino Garcia, an RBI double

Attendance was 4,883. Game time temp the entire game was 66* The game took 2:37 to complete.

Forgot to put this in.
W Barcelo (1-0)
L Altman (0-1)
S Wilhelmsen (1)

Opening Day Lineup (so I would assume these are the regulars)
Ive included their minor league BR pages where applicable.

I was right behind homeplate on the 1st base side slightly. 4 rows back.
Keep in mind, I am not a professional scout. Yet anyway Laughing So take these with a grain of salt if you like.

Skip Adams 2B
Seemed like he had good speed and probably the best bat control of the team. 2BB, and a single. Hes a pretty mediocre fielder. According to BR, thats a fluke though.

http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=adams-001ski

Lino Garcia LF
I bet he would have swung at a pickoff attempt to first. Lets just put it that way. That said, he did go 3-4 with 3 doubles and 4 rbi. He emulates the Gary Sheffield batting stance. Poor arm. BTW, hes a former dback farmhand ironically enough.

http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=garcia001lin

Dustin Yount 1B
Please tell me he isnt related to Robin Yount? Please? 3 times he dropped pretty routine throws over to 1st. He even made an error on a throw by Santana allowing the runner to get all the way to 3rd (3 base error). He was an ok hitter. I see in the Baltimore system he was making 20 Es at 1B a yr.

http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=yount-001dus

Jim Rushford DH
He was the DH so I cant tell you how his fielding was. I had no real opinion on his hitting either. He had a cup of coffee in the Majors a few years ago.

http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/rushfji01.shtml

Andre Marshall CF
He hit the only HR, so this guy has some power. Ok glove, mediocre range (C-) for a CF then again Im used to Finley and CY.
According to the BR page, the HR was a fluke, oh well.

http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=marsha001and

Curt Miaso RF
Clueless. In the 9th inning he allowed a ball to drop in front of him that there was absolutely no excuse for. I dont know if he was trying to give way to the 2B, but unless Orlando Hudson made a cameo appearance, there was no way the 2B could get there. Very lackadaisical. (and I spelled that word right on the first try! Laughing ) That was just the most glaring misplay he did.

http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=miaso-001cur

Mayo Santana 3B
Another ex dback farmhand. He reminded me of Dorn from Major League.

http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=santan001may

Luis Apodaca C
I know its IND league, but I think the dugout was calling pitches for him in key situations. So I question his ability there. He was pretty immobile behind the plate, didnt want to go near the screen behind home.

http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=apodac001lui

Franklin Gonzalez SS
He seemed athletic at SS, made a couple good plays. Would I call them Web Gems? No. Hes a singles hitter and another free swinger.

http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=gonzal010fra

Lorenzo Barcelo SP
He actually pitched parts of 3 seasons for the White Sox, so other than Jacome he might be the most experienced. And now that I know that I know why he seemed so good on the mound. 6 scoreless, Johnson ran him out in the 7th when he was obviously done, bad choice. His first 2 batters reached base in the 7th. He threw low 90s (there was no radar gun thats a guess), changeup and something I couldnt tell if it was a sinker or curveball. It went straight and then sunk, so im thinking it was a sinker. It didnt seem to have the right movement for a curveball.

http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/barcelo01.shtml

Tom Wilhelmsen CL
Tall, lanky RHP saved the game in the 9th, so I guess hes the closer. A bit shaky, though 1 hit off him was that mental error by Miaso. He wore #22 and had his hair in a afro, Im not making this up Laughing

http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=wilhel001tho

My opinion of Tim Johnson is that hes probably a players manager. Left his SP out to start the 7th when he had a guy up in the BP and the SP was obviously done after the 6th. Later on, he went to the mound after Luera had put 2 runners on base in the 8th, I thought "oh good his going to his BP" Nope. 3-run hr for the Chico C Bryan Silverman. THEN he went out and gave Luera the hook. (now why does that seem familiar?? Laughing )

So...what you are saying is that there isn't much reason to waste our time and money going to see these guys who now represent the only baseball in Tucson. I was actually thinking I would take my boys to a game this weekend as they have been doing some ads lately on TV.
Thanks for the scouting report Wink

I was to tired to write the play by play up the other night. Never got the chance on Friday, and did back to back double shifts on the weekend so here it goes. Some of my comments earlier will make more sense now.

Top of the 5th

There was 2 pitches inside to a Chico batter, the first being fouled off. Th count was 1-1 and Chico only had 1 hit ...but after the 2nd pitch (ball 1) the ump stepped out and kinda pointed at both benches. Was that a warning? Why would he be warning, there couldnt have been intent because Chico only had 1 hit and was playing lousy. Could it be an infielder wanted to know what the count was and he was just signaling, and it just happened to be really emphatic?

Top 6th

Barcelo got in a jam, 1st and 3rd 0 out. there was an attempted double steal (I think?), the catcher threw to 2B but the runner on 3rd never broke for home. Barcelo struck out the batter at the dish and then got the next 2 batters to pop it up.
3-0 Tucson

Top 7th

Barcelo was left out to start the 7th. The first 2 batters reached off him. There was a potential 5-4-3 double play but the Tucson 1B dropped the ball.
1st and 3rd, 1 out
sac fly RBI, 2 out
Barcelo removed in favor of LHP Luera against a LH batter, and got the K looking.

Bottom half of the 7th
5 runs for Tucson, now 8-1

Top 8th

LHP Luera still in the game.
RH batter #21 E5, throwing-runner advances all the way to 3rd
RH batter #2 4-3 go rbi, 1 out
RH batter #9 singled
LH batter #19 HBP

manager to the mound, left Luera in

runners now on 1st, 2nd, 1 out with the score 8-2
The Chico catcher hits a 3 run hr that cleared the top of the wall (20 feet high?) in straightaway CF (392 ft).

NOW LUERA IS REMOVED
1 out, 8-5 is the score

RHP Jayson Hanna (all I wrote about him was "very inconsistant" Laughing )

LH batter # 34 singled
RH #24 K
LH 4-3

Bottom 8th

Santana Kd swinging, Apodaca Kd looking and Gonzalez FO 8

Top 9th 5-8 Tucson leads it

LHP #27 Goodman in to face a LH batter and BB.

Pitching change RHP #22 Wilhelmsen in.
passed ball, runner to 2B and then an RBI double.

LH batter #2 singled (ball dropped in between 9 and 4, routine popup- 9 should have had it 10/10 times. Got lazy.

runners on 1st and 2nd. score is 6-8, 0 out

Now pitching to LH batter # 9 and Kd him.

LH batter #19 lined out to SS, and doubled off the runner at 2B for the 6-4.

Justin,

Are these guys really any good? Or can you see the same level of play across the street on the annex fields on Mon/Wed night?

Id rather see the Sidewinders play. Or just save up a little and buy a ticket for the Diamondbacks Express and take it to Chase. That said, I think Ill make it to a few more games. A freind of mine went a few days after I did, and said it was a good game. Hes not really that into baseball, so take that with a grain of salt.

What I saw was a very raw team. I could tell why they were not in professional baseball any more. Other than Barcelo, theres nothing good really.

Looking at the rosters of some of the teams in the Golden Baseball League. The Long Beach Armada have Hideki Arabu and Jose Lima on thier pitching staffs Laughing (and Gary Templeton is the manager).

The Orange County Flyers have Paul Abbot as thier pitching coach, with Phil Nevin as manager. Robert Fick and Damian Jackson are on the roster.

BTW I didnt report on it, but Barcelo was named pitcher of the week after his first 2 starts. Jose Lima was the pitcher of the week for the most recent one.

Quote:

Starting twice in the first week of the season, he went 2-0 with a league-leading ERA of 0.71 as he pitched 12.2 innings while striking out 14 and walking none.

Also of note, though I cant find the press release.

My buddy back home was saying Spivey hit a GW HR. I guess Spivey's quote in the paper was along the lines of "I know I'm not making it back to the majors, but I love the game and am going to keep playing as long as I can."

For what it's worth, the updated Toros hats are pretty rad. A nice adaptation of the old-school ones.

Sorry can't find any pics.

For those that have never seen Hi Corbett

Took it because I thought it looked reminiscent of Dodger Stadium with the palm trees.

The Toros clinched the playoffs with a 5-4 victory tonight. St George led 2-0 after the 1st half inning, but then Tucson scored one run each of the next 4. They had a 5-2 lead going into the 7th. It was a bit of a bullpen meltdown Laughing

I witnessed perhaps the most bizarre pregame today. A couple, in their late 30s I think, got married at homeplate before the first pitch. They had bridesmaids and everything. The groom thru out the first pitch and they had the bride come out and sing take me out to the balgame in the 7th inning. Jay Zucker performed the vows. You might think it was a stunt, but they arrived in a stretch limo.... and no I wasnt tripping on acid Laughing
