Chris Gabel / Reno Gazette-Journal today wrote:
Reno Aces: Brett Butler will manage team in inaugural season

Butler replaces Bill Plummer, who guided the Tucson Sidewinders to a 60-82 record last season in his second year as manager.

The move returns Butler to an on-field role after spending the past season as the minor-league roving outfield and base-running instructor for the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Aces' major league affiliate.

Butler managed Class A Lancaster in 2006 and Double-A Mobile in 2007, where he suffered a mild stroke following a July 28 game.

Any thoughts on Reno's starting rotation for the 2009 season?

Aces merchandise is now on sale at kiosks in Reno shopping malls.

It'd be even nicer if this merchandise were available via the team's website...

I need to get an Aces hat! Hopefully they'll have 'em online by Christmas.

It's on my list. Cool

A little snippet from Nick's article today:

Nick P wrote:
And a couple of WBC guys we missed yesterday: Carlin (Canada) and Agustin Murillo (Mexico).

By the way, check out Murillo’s winter ball numbers in Mexico. Not too shabby. The Diamondbacks loaned him to the Mexican League last season but he has a good shot at being the everyday first baseman at Triple-A Reno this year.

Here indeed are Murillo's numbers, and they're outstanding! Only 35 strikeouts to 40 walks in 252 AB's in the Mexican Winter League.

This guy is pretty much a lock for AAA next year, and I think he could definitely turn into an impact player for not only the Aces, but possibly even as a bench player for the Snakes.

He is not a kid. 27 this May. But did you see the sb's. 19 for 22. He stole 3 bases in limited time in AA with no cs.

We went to watch their game yesterday vs the Rockies AAA team. Obviously the reason was to see AJ Shappi pitch. AJ's bride called me and said that the tenative plan was for him to pitch on Saturday. They apparently had planned on working 10 pitchers in the game, and having it last until all ten got their work in??? Never heard of that one...
Anyway, Brooks Brown threw the first 4 innings, and I think he loaded the bases twice and allowed a bunch of runs. I wasn't paying too much attention- I was talking to players wives/girlfriends at that point.
Several others followed and they didn't have much more success. At one point, I asked Rusty Ryal was the score was. His comment was "A bunch to a little". Shocked
So, AJ was put in for the 9th inning. He had the best inning of any pitcher on either team. First out was one pitch, one out. Second was a fly out on a 3-1 count. Third out was a K. Great outing for him. He looked really sharp and relaxed.
At one point near the 8th inning? I think, Brett Butler wanted to bring AJ in but he wasn't warmed up yet and Mr Butler seemed a little miffed that he had to leave the current pitcher in. (Not saying it was AJ's fault, only that he wanted AJ in sooner rather than later.)
Then after that they went ahead and called the game at the normal 9 innings.
Just thought I would post this since someone earlier was asking if he was still around.

Update- I had dinner with AJ and his wife Thursday night before they broke camp and head for Reno tomorrow. I still can't believe I am saying Reno... anyway.
He said that his role this year will be sort of like Petit- he will be expected to pitch both out of the pen and spot start when needed. His comment was that it isn't bad, you just have to be mentally prepared for it. So, look for him in either spot this coming year.

Well now I have another update- this one not so good. It seems that AJ got released yesterday out of the blue. They were planning on leaving this morning for Reno, so guess now they will head back to California to regroup. I'm pretty much stunned at this point... it's been a hard year for him with losing his Mom and now this.

I think this stinks. He has pitched very well at times. He has done everything the team has asked. Last year he moved from the pen to starting and his numbers took a hit for it. He seems like a very good man. I think it is awful for them to cut him out of the blue.

I am sure he will catch on someplace else. Maybe somewhere where he is more appreciated so maybe it is for best. However, doesn't the timing stink? Wouldn't it have been better to be a free agent earlier in the spring? I don't know the answer to this in today's world, but if my gut is right (i.e. that this is terrible timing), I think it is pretty low for the organization to treat a player who has been a good solider throughout his career this way.
