Wow, I think I just witnessed the hand of God. The thunderstorm that just went through the EV was one of the most impressive I've ever seen. The lightning lit the sky like a strobe light. It's still going and it's probably been 45 minutes. It is accompanied by non-stop thunder - just a constant low rumble. It sounds like when a jet has just passed overhead, but it doesn't stop.

It absolutely poured here for a few minutes with very high winds. I stood on my balcony mesmerized by it. 30 minutes went by and the sky was still flashing. Incredible storm.

Lots of big bangs. Power out for 15 minutes in Tempe.

TV 10 just had a fire dept guy on and reports of a high rise in phoenix struck by some of this lightning and on fire Shocked

Temps droped 20 degrees in 20 minutes. We even had a little hail here in tempe too.

Take cover Shocked

Maybe you guys could toss some good luck my way as my house will probably be in the direct line for (future) Hurricane Gustav.

I've already been through Katrina and Rita...and they are not fun by any means Sad

It's still storming here but the intensity's dropped. For about 30 minutes the lightning flashes were so overwhelming it was like Big Mac coming to bat in 1998. Flashes in all parts of the sky non-stop and very very fast.

I got home from sparring and jumped in for a quick 30 laps in the pool. By the time I got to 20 the lightning had moved from a distant storm to close enough that thoughts of scalded TAP soup ushered me out of the pool and inside the house post-haste.

I love seeing and hearing the power of Arizona monsoon storms.

EDIT: Lightning not as intense now but the skies have opened up. Rain is coming down like a roaring river from heaven.

We had hail peppering our roof.......I heard on the news that the dome on the Sun Devils practice facility got blown off.

Pretty intense.

Today was trash day and I forgot to roll the trash can back in tonight. I wonder if it'll still be in our neighborhood when I go out tomorrow morning. Embarassed

I'm in north Phoenix, and we haven't gotten a drop of rain yet. I can hear distant thunder and see some lighting a ways off, but it's been calm here all night. I feel like I'm missing all the fun!

Right now, it's looking like Gustav will hit just west of NO Tuesday morning as a Cat 3. How much faith do you have in those rebuilt levees?

Torrential rain still coming down and lighting is back to strobe light status. One of the better storms we've seen this summer.

I saw on the news that the main cell that hit earlier was nearly 100 miles long and 40 miles wide. Shocked

Round 4 for me in South Tempe.

That was intense about 10:30. It was like Disco night at the Roller rink. And once the thunder started,, it was nonstop for about 15 minutes. Been a long time since I've seen a storm like this.

Since I posted that, we had a couple of short bursts roll through--only a few minutes each time, though. Nothing impressive. No loud thunder, no nearby lighting strikes...just a little rain. You guys are having all the fun.

I've been watching thunderstorms across the country (east coast, midwest, west coast, and here in AZ) for over 40 years, and I can't ever recall having seen lightning such as we saw last night here at Casa Evil south of the ballpark. We also experienced that continuous rumble of the thunder; had strobe-like lightning and an amazing amount of cloud-to-cloud forks of lightning; hail, and an unbelievably heavy amount of rain. There was a second wave a few hours after the first. Overall, an incredible experience.

sounds like that storm can rival the one we saw here in Chicago about a month back... I had never seen anything like that before either in terms of lightning, thunder, wind, and rain

I've been so homesick for those storms. Tucson has been getting some good ones all season.

The Devil Dome was destroyed. Gonna cost over $1M to repair, and now ASU is down a practice facility.

My buddies at ASU, from all parts of the country, said they never saw storms with the intensity of monsoons. Anywhere. Bostonians said it was like a Nor'Easter (?). And the Chicago kids were crapping themselves.

Being originally from the midwest myself, Dre, those storms back east don't compare. It's eerily wicked (in a good way) to watch these desert storms roll in...

Things got bad out here...Coming home from the Casino you couldnt see five feet. Power was out for 5 hours and to top it all off a tractor trailes was overturned by the winds just outside of the park.

Havnt seen a storm like this in 20 years.

Well, as sensitively as I can say this, I really don't care about the levees. I live in the "just west of New orleans". So this will be the first impact storm I've ever had to experience since Katrina and Rita were just lucky misses.
