Sources: Penny, Giants near deal

Quote:
Right-hander Brad Penny cleared waivers Monday and will sign with the San Francisco Giants, sources said.

Penny, 31, is 7-8 with a 5.61 ERA this season, and 101-83 in his career. He will make a prorated minimum salary with the Giants, and is expected to join their rotation, effectively replacing Joe Martinez.

By signing with the Giants, Penny is set up to pitch against the Dodgers, his former team. The teams are next scheduled to meet for a three-game series starting Sept. 11.

Penny left the team amid bad feelings on both sides at the end of last season.

Kuiper and Krukow were saying Posey's biggest job may be running back to the clubhouse for sunflower seeds this month.

He may be there for insurance more than ABs was the impression they gave viewers.

Lincecum scratched. Jesus wept.

Rotoworld -

According to Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle, Tim Lincecum has been scratched from Tuesday's start with an undisclosed injury.
We're sure to have more information soon, with Giants manager Bruce Bochy scheduled to address the media at 7:45pm EST. Madison Bumgarner is expected to get the nod in Lincecum's place against the Padres.

Apparently, it's inflammation.

Quote:
SAN FRANCISCO -- San Francisco Giants ace Tim Lincecum was scratched from his scheduled start Tuesday night against San Diego with inflammation in the lower left side of his back.

Lincecum was seen by a back specialist on Tuesday and underwent tests. He's also taking anti-inflammatories for the injury and will be re-evaluated later in the week. Bochy isn't sure when the injury happened, but Lincecum mentioned it after the team's flight home Sunday from Milwaukee.

Link

For his sake, I hope it's just a temporary inflammation. Back problems at his age do not bode well. The way the kid has been ridden this year, though, I'm not really surprised he's injured.

And ridden last year too -- to the tune of averaging 111 pitches per start -- if I"m reading his stats on mlb.com properly.

Was waiting for someone else to post the Villalona news, but I guess I'll just do it:

Rotoworld wrote:
Giants prospect Angel Villalona has been detained in connection to a murder in the Dominican Republic on Saturday night.
A police spokesman told the AP that Villalona is the prime suspect in the shooting death of 25-year-old Mario Felix de Jesus Velete. Villalona turned himself into the police on Sunday and is set to appear in court on Monday. The 19-year-old has been a top prospect since receiving a $2.1 million bonus at age 16 and is widely viewed as the Giants' first baseman of the future.

He faces up to 20 years in prison. As MLBTR's Tim Dierkes quipped earlier today, "a 20 year sentence would probably affect Angel Villalona's prospect status."

I'd say the Giants are pretty much done after tonight.

5 games back of CO with 11 to play is bad enough. They may have trouble just trying to hold onto 2nd place in the WC, at this point. Braves pulled even and Marlins are within 1/2 game of SF now.

They're rotation has just run out of gas.

Dionisio Soldevila / Associated Press wrote:
SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic A top prospect for the San Francisco Giants has been stripped of his U.S. visa after he was charged with killing a man in his Caribbean homeland.

Pablo Peguero, the Giants' representative for Latin America, said Friday that 19-year-old Angel Villalona can't join the team in the United States because the U.S. Embassy in the Dominican Republic has revoked his visa.

Dominican prosecutor Jose Antonio Polanco said Tuesday that Villalona offered the family of the man he allegedly killed nearly $140,000 to drop the case against him. He alleged the first baseman paid $55,000 and expected to offer another $83,000.

Polanco said the family viewed the payment as compensation for the killing of 25-year-old Mario Felix de Jesus Velete.

The family has not returned repeated calls seeking comment. Villalona, who has pleaded innocent to the murder charge, also has declined to speak to reporters.

Police say Villalona, who received a $2.1 million signing bonus in his 2006 deal with the Giants, turned himself in 12 hours after the Sept. 19 bar shooting in La Romana. He could face up to 20 years in prison if found guilty.

Villalona was released last week on $14,000 bail after the family issued a statement saying it had accepted the money, Polanco said. A Dominican judge is expected to hear the case in about a month.

Villalona hit .267 with nine homers and 42 RBIs in 74 games for Class-A San Jose this season. Baseball America selected him as the Giants' top prospect before the 2008 season, and the 6-foot-3, 200-pound slugger was selected for the Futures Game during All-Star festivities that year.

Wow- these kinds of stories just keep coming from there. Wild and wooly place. We vacationed there in 2000- the only issue was that it was the week before President Clinton came to the resort next door to us for a visit. Secret service everywhere. Those black suits with dark sunglasses stick out like an enormous sore thumb on the pure white sandy beaches...
don't remember any locals causing trouble-

Losers

2. Giants: The worst-hitting team in baseball announced through continually cantankerous GM Brian Sabean that it didn't have the funds to play for Holliday or Bay, which ought to be real encouraging news for Tim Lincecum, the freakish talent who could only manage 15 wins due to a lack of run support. They continue to wait in the unrealistic hope that power-hitting Dan Uggla will be non-tendered by the Marlins (he won't be) and haven't really seemed to figure out how to field an offense to match the pitching talent they've assembled. Even if they eventually get Uggla, they'll have to figure out how to rework their defensive alignment to fit two second basemen (with Freddy Sanchez being the other).

If Dan Uggla is your savior, you're going to hell.

Giants signed Mark DeRosa for 2years - $12M

ESPN

"That was one of the big overriding factors when I decided where wanted to play, the pitching factor," DeRosa said. "Pitching wins games."

Thanks EJ, now my mind can be at rest. Wink

And I have a question, has Brian Sabean from the year 2003 replaced the Brian Sabean from 2010? If so, all he needs is Eric Gagne to make his bullpen unstoppable.
