Still waiting

The Diamondbacks still have yet to reach an agreement with first-round draft pick Daniel Schlereth, a left-handed reliever out of Arizona.

"We've agreed on a lot of things but haven't quite got all the way," Josh Byrnes said.

Medical issues do not appear to be the holdup, nor is the demand for a major-league contract. That the deal is taking a while is a surprise, considering he has a chance to be a fast mover in the farm system.

"I do think for some players the first summer is not that necessary, and in fact it's usually good to rest him," Byrnes said. "I think in this case a summer of pitching could be good, because he's on, potentially, an accelerated time line. There's a bit more of a light at the end of the tunnel in his development than for most guys."

Tigers signed first-round pick RHP Ryan Perry.
Perry receives a $1.48 million bonus as the 21st overall selection and could be the first 2008 draftee to reach the majors, perhaps as soon as September if the Tigers still need the bullpen help.

Well, this gives us a pretty close idea to what we'll give Schlereth.

Sounds like it's a minor league deal.
Had he stayed healthy, he might've gotten a major league deal

Hopefully he can stay healthy and pitch well
The Dbacks will need him sooner than later

Schlereth passes tests, completes deal with D-Backs

First-round draftee Daniel Schlereth will officially join the Diamondbacks’ organization on Thursday.

Schlereth, the 26th player taken in the June draft, agreed to a contract that includes a signing bonus of $1.33 million after passing the D-Backs’ medical tests.

He is to fly to Casper, Wyo., to join the D-Backs’ short-season Class A Missoula team Thursday.

While medical issues dragged out the negotiation process, Schlereth said he hopes to be able to pitch by this weekend.

Given the D-Backs’ proclivity for promoting their young talent, it is not inconceivable that Schlereth could be in the major leagues in September to aid a bullpen that has only one left-hander in Doug Slaten, but there is no timetable.

Schlereth, 22, was 2-0 with a 1.81 ERA at UA but did not pitch in the NCAA super regional at Miami the first weekend in June because of an injury that originally was called a strained oblique muscle.

The injury instead was to a left latissimus dorsi muscle, said Schlereth, who added that he understood the D-Backs’ thoroughness.

Steve Gilbert's article

Quote:
Though complete financial details were not immediately released, Schlereth, son of ESPN football analyst Mark Schlereth, will receive a $1.33 million signing bonus due to his draft slot. He will report to rookie-level Missoula either over the weekend or on Monday.

My thought from the beginning is that they selected Schlereth with the intention of using him in 09 to fill one of our BP slots. If he's the difference between us signing Cruz to a 3yr/18mil contract then I'm Ok with the reasoning.

I've been wondering the same, last I heard he was starting a pitching program and was to make his first appearance last week. Went to a couple of the games here but he didn't pitch and wasn't listed in the program. I'll post something if I see him play.

Schlereth is projected to make his debut on Saturday for Smokey the Bear bobblehead night. I'll be sure to go and see how he does, and to get my bobblehead of course.

In his debut Schlereth pitched one scoreless inning of relief with 2 K's and a walk. He looked really rusty early on, throwing a lot of pitches in the dirt and one wild pitch. The gun topped out at 93mph.

Overall, good performance by Schlereth.
He needs to start getting back to his rhythm, but he looked good.
