Laughing Self induced by stupidity - slammed his bat into the ground after yet another out earning 16 stitches. The San Francisco Chronicle had a great headline: Tulowitzki's temper tantrum is costly

I recall Eric Byrnes last year used to slam his bat in to the ground just like Tulo each time he'd make an out until one time during his post-AB theatrics his bat shattered and a shard from the exploding bat nailed the opposing catcher (Miguel Olivo) in the eye. Not quite so funny.

Rotoworld

Quote:
Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that the Rockies are unable to trade Brian Fuentes before the August 31 deadline because moving him to bereavement leave Tuesday canceled his placement on waivers.
According to Rosenthal, "Fuentes is not eligible to come off the bereavement list until Friday" and "if the Rockies again placed him on waivers then, he would not clear until after the Sunday deadline for postseason rosters." A pretty huge mistake if the Rockies were planning to trade Fuentes, but indications are that they'd decided to likely keep the impending free agent.

Relatively good news for the NL and us... the Dodgers were probably in line to win the waiver claim and I'm not sure they'd give up the necessary players if Fuentes would be postseason ineligible.

An update from everyone's favorite idiot writer

http://www.rockymountainnews.com/news/2008/oct/23/rockies-closer-plans-unchanged-loss-weathers/?partner=RSS

and the summary from MLBTR

Let's take a look at the latest column from Tracy Ringolsby of the Rocky Mountain News.

Quote:
* Rockies "closer of the future" Casey Weathers will miss the '09 season due to elbow surgery. However, the Rox are still not likely to re-sign Brian Fuentes. Joel Sherman expects Fuentes to sign for three years, $36-39MM. Brad Lidge signed for three years, $37.5MM in July, but that was not on the open market. The Mets will be in on Fuentes.
* The Rockies are expected to trade one of Garrett Atkins or Matt Holliday this winter. The Phillies will inquire on both (they tried to acquire Holliday this summer). Ringolsby says the Red Sox have discussed Holliday internally and considers the Angels a match for Atkins. The Red Sox, however, are set at the corners with Jason Bay and J.D. Drew.
* Brothers Jayson and Laynce Nix are both free agents. Jayson, 26, hit .303/.373/.591 in Triple A. Laynce, 28, hit .284/.348/.539. Jayson plays second base, Laynce plays outfield.

I know Spring training stats dont mean much but damn.

The Rockies have lost all seven games, been outscored 53-26, outhomered 11-4 and outpitched (6.30 ERA to 3.43 ERA).

Stole that little nugget from the Denver Post.

The rockies have some interesting young arms in Jimenez and De La Rosa.
Unfortunately, both of them are very wild, and need consistency.
Beyond Cook, their rotation is a lot of questions marks...
Losing Francis hurts them a lot.

Their offense will be fine... but they aren't going anywhere with that pitching

Has a manager ever been canned in spring training?

Lots of talk about Hurdle going bye bye soon.

If so look for WBC Mexico team manager Vinny Castilla to get a phone call.

As noted in tonight's gameday thread, Jeff Munn reports that Brad Hawpe was hit in the earflap tonight in Denver during a pickoff attempt at first base on a throw from the catcher. Hawpe was taken off on a cart with a neckbrace, taken to the hospital, and appears to have a concussion.

Corpas' days in majors appear to be numbered

SAN FRANCISCO By giving up the game-winning run to the Giants' Rich Aurilia in the 10th inning, Manuel Corpas likely punched his ticket back to Triple-A Colorado Springs.

With his slider hanging above the plate too long, Corpas has been charged with three of the Rockies' last five losses. His ERA has risen to 6.75. He no longer looks like a dominant late-game reliever, and the time for talk and off-day adjustments appear to be over.

"Everything that can be said to Manny has been said. Everything," manager Clint Hurdle said. "He's well aware of what he needs to do. We have laid it out in black and white. He's had a month-and-a-half of good pitching in the last seven months in the big leagues. We need better than that for him to stay here. He's well aware of that."

Corpas appears perplexed at what's gone wrong.

"I'm trying to do my job; I don't want to go down," he said. "I don't know what happened. My confidence is OK, but I don't know what happened."

From Rotoworld...

According to the Colorado Springs Gazette, several Rockies have speculated that manager Clint Hurdle will be fired on Thursday.

"Following another dismal showing Wednesday in an 8-6 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers at Coors Field, several Rockies players privately speculated that today's off day could mark the end of Hurdle's seven-plus-year tenure as manager," read's The Gazette's report. The Rox are off to an 18-28 start and attendance numbers have plummeted. We'll be on watch.

Not that much different than a manager getting canned a year and a half after a 90 win season and a trip to the playoffs.

Hurdle has had an extremely mediocre run as a manager, save for one improbable 14 out of 15 winning streak at the end of the season, which carried over into a playoff run. I would equate his tenure to that of Gil Hodges, who except for a couple months with the 69 Miracle Mets, did absolutely nothing to distinguish himself as a manager.

The parallels are remarkable; and yet unsurprising.

I have to admit, after the '07 season, I drank the kool-aid and thought '08 would be our year. I had another big swig before the start of this season; even a moderately-sized refill after the road trip to Atlanta, Florida and Oakland. No more. I ain't takin' another drop o' that stuff until I see some significant progress made. Confused

Hurdle has a career .461 record in Colorado and has had only 1 winning season. How long should he deserve to stay there?

If x=how long he's been there, and y=how long he deserves to be there, then y < x.

Let me put that another way: y <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< x.

And for the mathematically challenged: Barmes ~= BoMel.

However, given how frequently we have to face the Rockies, and given the possibility (however slight that may be) that a change will lead to an improvement on the part of the Rockies, here's hoping that he will be there for x^2 years; or even x^10 years! Very Happy
