Ok, perhaps that WAS an understatement. LOL

Zito's fastball was registering a mere 84-85 mph. He has no command and should be getting shelled every time out. The fact he only gave up 4 runs today was short of miraculous.

My friend had the following to say, "He's probably going to claim he's injured soon. Nobody with that kind of a contract can say "I'm just a shitty pitcher.""

Giants fans sitting around us were trying to figure out how much Zito would be making per win. One claimed it would likely be $1M per win. A 2nd quickly chimed in, "Much higher than that." A 3rd claimed it would be at least 5. Then after an exchange of views they all agreed Zito will be lucky to win 2 games this year.

Barry Zito caught more shit from Giants fans today than Eric Byrnes by at least a 20-1 margin.

His avg fastball velocity:

2005: 87.3
2006: 85.8
2007: 84.5
2008: 83.0

he's lost velocity on all his other pitches as well

Scroll to bottom of page

The results:

K/9 Graph

There is a chance that Zito could learn how to pitch well enough to be a league avg innings eater with his current stuff.......run out 200 innings at 4.50 era for the next several years, but thats not what the Giants paid for. They paid top dollar on a very long term contract to get an ace, a front of the rotation guy, not a number 4 starter.

Here's a quote from the Chronicle on their web page at SFgate. Not sure who it was attributable to.

Quote:
It was more Brandon Webb's excellence than Barry Zito's awfulness that gave Arizona a 4-1 win. Still, for $126 million, the dude is 11-17.

Watching him yesterday, looks like the Giants got themselves another Livan in Zito.

Oh, and at the bottom of one of their articles, they listed the season lines for both Webb and Zito along with their salaries for 08. Further fuel to the fire in SF.

Thankfully Josh Byrnes calls the shots in Arizona and not Brian Sabean or Eric Byrnes.

Watching those game SF looked just terrible. They should lose 100 games this season.

Yes, losing only 100 seems optimistic for the Giants. Their offense is godawful.

their rotation is good and their bullpen is underrated. that'll keep them in a lot of games, at least at home. i think they may lose 100, but even that may be a bit high. more like 95 losses, tops

Ron Kroichick / San Francisco Chronicle today wrote:
Giants fans are growing weary of their $126 million pitcher absorbing loss after discouraging loss. He's now 11-17 since signing as a free agent in December 2006.

"You can't panic and you can't change anything," Zito said. "I've been in this game too long to look at two weeks of baseball and let that dictate my mood or my confidence. ... I can't focus on the record. I know I have good stuff and I know it's going to surface eventually."

By comparison

Brandon Webb: 4-0, 1.86 ERA with 22 strikeouts and eight walks. 2008 salary: $5.5 million.

Barry Zito: 0-4, 4.50 ERA with eight strikeouts and nine walks. 2008 salary: $14.5 million.

Should we ignore all of 2007 as well, Barry?

I agree that their pitching is the reason they are not the 04 D-backs, but the are going to lose 1-0, 2-0, and 3-0 a lot. lol

I see a lot of unearned runs in their future. That defense was bad.

If you submit a trivia question in the game threads, you have to give the answer if you want it to be considered for the broadcast.

Yes, you made that clear.

But it was used as a Giants AFLAC trivia question over the weekend.

So it shouldn't count here.

I just thought it was a pretty good question.

Zito's real weakness is facing hitters. I think he should try to filibuster in order to minimize that.

...and the beat goes on...

Quote:
Someone would need Superman's vision to see the light at the end of the Barry Zito tunnel.

Granted, it is a long tunnel. Zito has another five years plus 30 starts to get it right. But as he fell to 0-5 for the season and 11-18 overall in the Giants' 5-4 loss to Arizona on Tuesday night, it was difficult to watch him waste an early 3-0 lead and believe he is one good effort or one mechanical tweak from starting to earn his hefty paycheck.

The Giants scored three runs for Zito in the first two innings against Brandon Webb, a Herculean effort against one of the National League's most miserly pitchers. By the fourth, that lead was gone, and so was Zito.

Manager Bruce Bochy was not a happy man after this loss, for many reasons. The Giants were 2-for-15 with runners in scoring position and he was ejected in the seventh inning after arguing a call that appeared by be blown by the umpires. But it was clear that Bochy was not happy with Zito's performance after the lefty was staked to such a generous lead.

In one of those "I better not say what I'm really thinking" quotes, Bochy responded to a question about Zito by saying, with lips clenched, "It was not a good night, not a good outing for him. I'll leave it at that."
