I had a live draft on yahoo today, 6X6 leagues (R, HR, RBI, SB, AVE, OBP for hitters; W, K, WHIP, ERA, S, Holds for pitchers). A bunch of friends from graduate school...

16 teams, mixed league, AL+NL, rather limited rosters (c, 1b, 2b, ss, 3b, of, of, of, ut, sp, sp, rp, rp, p, p, p, bn, bn, bn, bn, bn, bn, dl). In total, 21 rounds of drafting...

Even though it's a mixed league, I wanted to draft NL only guys. I ended up with the fourth overall pick of the draft; A-rod, Hanley Ramirez and Jose Reyes went 1-2-3

Here's my draft

Code:

The Big Units
View All
Round    Pick    Player    Position
1.    (4)    David Wright    3B
2.    (29)    Russell Martin    C
3.    (36)    Lance Berkman    1B,OF
4.    (61)    Hunter Pence    OF
5.    (68)    Chris Young    OF
6.    (93)    Chris Young    SP
7.    (100)    Rickie Weeks    2B
8.    (125)    Brett Myers    SP,RP
9.    (132)    Yovani Gallardo    SP
10.    (157)    Chad Billingsley    SP,RP
11.    (164)    Rafael Soriano    RP
12.    (189)    Khalil Greene    SS
13.    (196)    Justin Upton    OF
14.    (221)    Randy Johnson    SP
15.    (228)    Brian Fuentes    RP
16.    (253)    Jay Bruce    OF
17.    (260)    Joey Votto    1B,OF
18.    (285)    Mark Reynolds    3B
19.    (292)    Bob Howry    RP
20.    (317)    Chad Qualls    RP
21.    (324)    Edison Vólquez    SP

Basically, by the time I drafted Bruce, all good closers were gone. I was hoping to get one more NL closer with th 16th round pick, but all of them were gone. And Sherrill (Balt) went before I got the 17th round pick...

Another thing... there was a run-up on shortstops. Stephen Drew, my "sleeper" SS, went in the 9th round (JD Drew went in the 14th round). So when the 12th round came, my choices were either Khalil Greene or Yunel Escobar. I decided to go with the HR/RBI guy over the BA/SB guy...

Which reminds me, a question...

Gallardo is on the DL so I have an open spot. The question is, should I get another SP (I'm thinking Cueto) or go for another Holds guy (David Weathers is available). Your thoughts?

I'm gonna have to get some more saves along the way eventually...

Also, fwiw, this was the first round

Code:

Round 1
1.    Álex Rodríguez    The Three St...
2.    Hanley Ramírez    Name of the ...
3.    José Reyes    Syracuse Bul...
4.    David Wright    The Big Units
5.    Albert Pujols    The Mohels
6.    Matt Holliday    Explosive Re...
7.    Johan Santana    Fighter Haya...
8.    Chase Utley    The Rogistics
9.    Miguel Cabrera    Bearskin Rug...
10.    David Ortiz    The Famous G...
11.    Ryan Howard    Pedif Isle P...
12.    Prince Fielder    Who Farted?
13.    Carl Crawford    THE ANABOLIC...
14.    Jimmy Rollins    das boot
15.    Grady Sizemore    Riders of Lohan
16.    Josh Beckett    Team America

Btw, I moved Gallardo on the DL, so I have an open spot. Whom should I get?

David Weathers, RP, CIN (holds)
Brad Hennessey, RP, SFG (holds)
David Riske, RP, MIL (holds)
Matt Lindstrom, RP, FLA (holds)
Tom Gordon, RP, PHI (holds)

Or should I get one of these two guys

Manny Parra, P, MIL
Johnny Cueto, P, CIN

Remember, Holds count, and I have Fuentes, Howry and Qualls for holds (and only R Soriano for saves)...

I'm leaning toward Riske right now

I think Riske is a good choice there... He should get some opportunities to pitch with a lead - which is more than could be said for most of the others on that list - less Gordon, who is due to crumble...

Is Tony Pena available?

Also, what are the full names of those teams? They seem hilarious.

I like parra off that list.

I developed a draft tool a few years ago that I run during baseball drafts to track every persons roster (positions, stats, etc) so that I can determine during the draft how my team stacks up in each stat category. . In any round I can quickly assess how I rank in all 10 categories, which positions have been chosen and by which teams. I can sort my rankings based on 4 different ranking systems (yahoo, espn, bpro, average of those) plus some other tricks. I have a page that has each set of positions broken down so that if I need a SS I can see how many decent shortstops are left. I have a tool that predicts which players will be selected by the next time I select.

After that I developed a H2H tool that predicts 250 simulated seasons using the pecota stats to see an average number of wins you can expect.

If you have the the complete draft in some form you can send me I can compile that pretty quickly. If the league is H2H I can also predict a season record.

I have to say, "Explosive Renteria" might be the best fantasy baseball team name I've seen in awhile

I was definitely thinking that. Even better than when my friend, who was a Michael Barrett fan, changed his team name to "Men With One Ball" after the infamous "foul tip" incident.

I've made several moves, my lineup as it is now... Tried to pick up Cueto off waivers but the buzzards with higher priority got him. Villanueva is available, do you think he's any better than the SP I got (remember, holds count)

You have to choose who you like better, Villanueva or Parra. I'd go with the one with the better strikeout rates because he will be less dependent on Brewers defense.

Parra had superior GB rates in the minors, but neither pitcher has been able to maintain their minor league GB rates.......both dropping under 40%.

Both have good and similar K rates, but Parra seems to have a bit better command.

Parra also had the edge in homers allowed.

BUT....right now it looks like Villanueva has a spot in the rotation and Parra is more likely to be in the pen when Gallardo returns.

For that reason, I'd take Villanueva.

Villanueva has had success in the bullpen... Plus, won't be surprise if Bush gets bumped to the pen when Gallardo is up, if both Parra and Villanueva are pitching well...

I'll hold onto Parra for a bit

Volquez delivering on his sleeper tag in his first start against the Phillies. Me likey.

Dropped Howry in favor of Jared Burton. A team that uses holds/strikeouts as categories would be wise to look at Burton. Howry's already lost the setup role to Marmol, and now Wuertz and Hart both appear to be getting Lou's love for the 7th inning

Same yahoo league as last year. mixed league, 16 teams in the league.
Like last year, I decided to draft NL only players again.
But this year, I'm going to win it, dammit!

Importantly, this is a 6X6 league
OBP is the 6th category for hitters (besides R, HR, RBI, AVE, SB)
Holds is the 6th category for pitchers (besides W, SV, K, ERA, WHIP)

My team

C, McCann, ATL
1B, Votto, CIN
2B, Uggla, FLA
SS, Furcal, LAD
3B, Wright, NYM
OF, Kemp, LAD
OF, Milledge, WAS
OF, Upton, ARI
UT, Helton, COL
BN, Lopez, ARI
BN, Spilborgh, COL

SP, Lowe, ATL
SP, Johnson, FLA
RP, Marmol, CHN
RP, Bell, SDP
P, Carpenter, STL
P, Jimenez, COL
P, Pelfrey, NYM
BN, Soriano, ATL
BN, Motte, STL
BN, Corpas, COL

Weak on starting pitching, but I decided to emphasize offense first
Expecting huge seasons from Johnson and Carpenter
Should be OK on the relievers front
With 16 teams, 2 solid closers are enough, ditto for setup guys
The league has 1250 IP maximum limit
So you need 5 starters @ 200 IP plus 5 relievers @ 50 IP or so...

BTW, here was my draft in the mixed league

Le Motte Fouqué
1. (4) David Wright
2. (29) Matt Kemp
3. (36) Brian McCann
4. (61) Rafael Furcal
5. (68 ) Dan Uggla
6. (93) Joey Votto
7. (100) Lastings Milledge
8. (125) Carlos Mármol
9. (132) Justin Upton
10. (157) Josh Johnson
11. (164) Derek Lowe
12. (189) Heath Bell
13. (196) Chris Carpenter
14. (221) Ubaldo Jiménez
15. (228) Mike Pelfrey
16. (253) Adam LaRoche
17. (260) Felipe López
18. (285) Dave Bush
19. (292) Rafael Soriano
20. (317) Jason Motte
21. (324) Colby Rasmus

Once I realized it was 6X6 league (after the draft), made these moves

1) Dropped LaRoche for Helton
2) Dropped Bush for Villanueva
3) Dropped Rasmus for Spilborgh

I also dropped Soriano for Corpas thinking he'd win the closer's job
Since Street won the closer's job a few days ago, I...
4) Dropped Corpas for Hoffman (someone had dropped him when he went on the DL)
5) Placed Hoffman on my team's DL
6) Picked up Ryan Frankly

7) Dropped Pelfrey for McDonald, LAD
Am starting McDonald vs. ARI tomorrow Embarassed
I'm sorry, but I need the win

Same league, new year.
6X6 league, OBP + HLD count
16 teams, 21 players per team (plus 1 DL)

Just had my draft. It's a mixed league, but I only took NL guys.
Did the same thing last year, and really kicked their butts.

Happened to have the first overall pick (dumb yahoo luck).
Here's the way my draft went

Quote:

R'Andy Whoreholes
1. (1) Albert Pujols
2. (32) Brian McCann
3. (33) Mark Reynolds
4. (64) Andrew McCutchen
5. (65) Josh Johnson
6. (96) Tommy Hanson
7. (97) Ricky Nolasco
8. (128) Ian Stewart
9. (129) Carlos Mármol
10. (160) Stephen Drew
11. (161) Francisco Cordero
12. (192) Colby Rasmus
13. (193) Cameron Maybin
14. (224) Tim Hudson
15. (225) Kyle Blanks
16. (256) Mat Latos
17. (257) Drew Stubbs
18. (288) Brandon Lyon
19. (289) Alcides Escobar
20. (320) Luke Gregerson
21. (321) Juan Gutiérrez

For some reason thought Lyon was the closer in Houston.
Some closer types still available on waivers (Lidge, Capps)

I had to take some gambles in the outfield, with Maybin, Blanks, Stubbs
But if those guys explode like I think they will, watch out
And much as I like Drew, had to get insurance in Escobar
