Best Damn ran an interview with Grace from Pittsburgh the other night. Grace played it up and acted surprised that the choice wasn't to send it into outerspace.

I think Grace was well aware of the list.

Banish it into space was one of the options.

A point of which I was/am aware... Wink

My point in my post made here about Grace is that no one could have had any doubt about the trend (or the outcome) who was paying attention to this list! That's all! Very Happy

Weren't there over 10 million votes to brand it with an asterisk and send it to Cooperstown?

I think their were 10 million votes in total, with 47% of those voting brand it.

That's a relief. One less Barry on Barry speech we'll have to endure.

From Bonds' career, the Hall has only his 526th home-run ball. It signifies no particular milestone, but the museum took it as a marker of his membership in the 500-homer club.

So, of course, the museum wants No. 756 from Marc Ecko, the fashion designer who bought the ball for $750,000 and then took an online poll on whether to brand it with an asterisk. A spokesman for the Hall on Friday declined to comment on Bonds' ultimatum.

But it makes no sense to reject the donation or not to display it. If the asterisk does end up on the ball - there's been no sighting of the artwork yet - it will tell a story about the game as we know it today from the drug scandals to the memorabilia-inspired hucksterism. Accepting it won't open the door to wholesale vandalism of future artifacts, as some have argued. Only the ball from a historic homer leaves the field. Everything else stays in the hands of MLB employees.

Besides, it's presumptuous to think that future generations will see the asterisk as we do now. In 50 years, if the players all look like professional wrestlers or offensive linemen, the defaced ball will remind visitors of how misunderstood Bonds was in his own time.

On the other hand, if the steroid era grows into a health crisis, the asterisk will be worse than a simple rebuke to Bonds. Less than three months after Bonds passed Aaron, Paul Byrd joined Jason Giambi on the very short list of athletes conclusively linked to human growth hormone. Both reportedly had pituitary tumors. In each case, the drug usage appears to have preceded the appearance of the tumor.

There are some huge questions hanging out there, and we're all obsessing over the markings on a ball.

from the linked article:

Bonds called Ecko an "idiot" when the designer announced plans to hold the vote. The slugger later said he would boycott the Hall if it displayed the ball with an asterisk.

It's nice to see that something good will come of all this. Wink
