IIRC, their ballot mentioned that the ball would be sent to the HOF after the * was burned into it.

Marc Ecko struck an exposed nerve with Barroids. When asked by reporters about Ecko's online ballot for ball #756, Bonds snarled, "He's stupid. He's an idiot."

I also voted for the * treatment.

+1 respect for Marc Ecko.

I've got to say that I agree. Any person who would spend close to 1 million dollars(no matter how much money he has) for the sake of attention is a stupid fucking idiot. Of all the things to do with 750,000 grand...

I heard Jeff Idelson from the HOF on the radio this morning saying that Cooperstown will display the ball with the asterisk branded on it. He said the HOF believes in recording historical accuracy and that this reflects the public's thoughts and sentiments at this time in history.

It's a valid sentiment. The HOF's goal is to capture baseball history, and nothing will personify the controversy surrounding the use of steroids in this era as that * on BB's record breaking ball.

Younger generations will wonder about the meaning behind the *, so Barry truly has graphically illustrated a major movement for the era for posterity.

You may think Ecko is "a stupid fucking idiot" but this guy just bought himself significant airtime and exposure. From a marketing standpoint I'm sure it was a hell of a good move. And as his name is the title of his brand, he'll surely sell some more merchandise because of this. Nice marketing ploy. Give him credit as a business man.

No doubt. He also bought his name a permanent spot in Cooperstown.

Cheaper and far more effective than buying a Super Bowl ad.

I seriously doubt Ecko sells a million dollars more worth of merchandise because of this marketing ploy. The rejects who would normally buy that shit probably don't know what a baseball is anyway.

meh... long term investment that will pay off.

In shorter term, how bout considering taxes... A donation to the HOF and he'll be able to deduct the value of the ball.

I could understand those sentiments if Ecko decided on his own to brand the ball, but that's not the case. I don't know how many people voted, but I'd assume it's well into the thousands. Arenas' personal attack on Ecko is entirely baseless.

There were over 10 million votes and 47% (more than 4.7 million) voted to brand it and then send it to the HOF.

$750k to Marc Ecko is probably about like $750 to me. If I had the chance to buy the Barry ball for $750, brand it, and send it to the Hall of Fame, I would too.

Last I heard, Ecko was consulting with an artist on a tasteful design for the asterisk. So I doubt it's been done yet.
