Nike suspended its lucrative contract with Michael Vick on Friday, while Reebok took the unprecedented step of stopping sales of his No. 7 jersey.

In another dose of bad news for the indicted quarterback, a top trading card company announced it was pulling Vick's likeness from any new packs.

Facing protests from animal-rights groups, Nike announced it was suspending Vick's endorsement deal without pay, as well as halting sales of Vick-related shoes and other products at its retail stores.

"Nike is concerned by the serious and highly disturbing allegations made against Michael Vick, and we consider any cruelty to animals inhumane and abhorrent," Nike spokesman Dean Stoyer said in a statement.

Reebok, the official uniform supplier of the NFL, said it would stop selling Vick's replica jersey at retail stores and through its Web site.

Donruss, one of four major trading card companies, has decided to pull Vick's card from any future 2007 releases, according to Beckett Media, which covers the collectibles industry.

One of Michael Vick's co-defendants doesn't want to wait for trial.

Instead, a plea agreement hearing has been scheduled for Tony Taylor at 9 a.m. Monday in the federal dogfighting conspiracy case.

Taylor's hearing was added to U.S. District Judge Henry E. Hudson's docket Friday, a day after he and the other three defendants pleaded not guilty before the same judge. Vick and the others still are scheduled for trial Nov. 26.

Prosecutors claim Taylor, 34, found the Surry County property purchased by Vick and used it as the site of "Bad Newz Kennels," a dogfighting enterprise. The Hampton man also allegedly helped purchase pit bulls and killed at least two dogs that fared poorly in test fights.

Puzzling that a guy who has the financial means to entertain, enlighten, or educate himself would be involved in somthing so cruel. Of course some may argue what constitutes animal abuse, but I think dog fighting is generally considered reprehensible by the vast majority of our society. In turn, society is correct to spurn and castigate those who have participated in vile behavior.

If the allegations are true, he chose a dark path that surely clouds his soul.

One of Michael Vick's co-defendants pleaded guilty Monday to federal dog-fighting conspiracy charges in a plea agreement with prosecutors.

Tony Taylor, 34, who will be sentenced Dec. 14, said he was not promised any specific sentence in return for his cooperation with the government.

Taylor, of Hampton, Va., entered his plea in U.S. District Court to conspiracy to travel in interstate commerce in aid of unlawful activities, and conspiring to sponsor a dog in an animal fighting venture.

Vick, the star quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons, and two other co-defendants pleaded not guilty last week to similar charges.

The offenses carry a maximum punishment of five years in prison and fines of up to $250,000.

Michael Vick's co-defendant, who pled guilty to federal dog-fighting conspiracy charges, said Monday that he was financed almost entirely by Vick.

As part of a plea bargain, Tony Taylor said "Bad Newz Kennelz" was funded by Vick and admitted to executing dogs by way of drowning, hanging, and electrocution in 2002. He also said Vick was frequently at dog fights.

Now a new type of retribution has been created to give every dog a little pay-back. The Vick Dog Chew Toy will be available for delivery on August 7th and will hopefully help open the eyes of many others. This has been created to help the Humane Society shed some light on this horrendous sport of dogfighting. Each person now has the opportunity to buy a dog chew toy that will help other animals live a better life than those poor dogs that were found on April 25th.

The most rewarding part of The Vick Dog Chew Toy is that a portion of the proceeds are being donated to the Jacksonville Humane Society to help spread awareness of this terrible phenomenon.

Let your dog begin chewing today!

Vick Faces Friday Deadline for Plea Agreement

No specifics are mentioned; but SportsCenter reported earlier today that the deal was for one year in jail.

PostPosted: Mon Aug 20, 2007 12:05 pm    Post subject: Vick will take plea deal in dogfighting case, lawyer says Reply with quote

Michael Vick's lawyer said today the Atlanta Falcons quarterback will plead guilty to federal dogfighting conspiracy charges, which will expose him to a possible prison term and jeopardize his pro football career.

The offense is punishable by up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine, although federal sentencing guidelines most likely would call for less. On its Web site, the Virginian Pilot said Vick has accepted a deal for 18 to 36 months in prison to avoid additional federal charges.

A federal grand jury had been scheduled to convene today in the federal court where Vick and three co-defendants were indicted on dogfighting charges last month.

Vick’s last two co-defendants pleaded guilty Friday and said he bankrolled gambling on dogfights at Vick’s property in rural Surry County, not far from his hometown of Newport News. One said Vick helped drown or hang dogs that didn’t do well.

Quanis Phillips of Atlanta and Purnell Peace of Virginia Beach entered plea agreements and agreed to testify against Vick. Tony Taylor of Hampton struck a similar deal last month.

The gambling allegations alone could trigger a lifetime ban under the NFL’s personal conduct policy.

The NFL has barred Vick from the Falcons’ training camp but has withheld further action while the league conducts its own investigation.

Peace, Phillips and Taylor pleaded guilty to the same charges facing Vick: conspiracy to travel in interstate commerce in aid of unlawful activities and conspiracy to sponsor a dog in an animal fighting venture.

The offense is punishable by up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Sentencings for them are set for November and December.

Double standard? Discuss ...

LINK
ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- The head of the Atlanta chapter of the NAACP (R.L. White) said Wednesday that Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick has made mistakes but that they should not cost him his football career with the NFL.

He urged the National Football League, the Atlanta Falcons and Vick's commercial sponsors not to dump the troubled athlete.

"We feel that whatever the courts demand as a punishment for what he has done, once he has paid his debt to society, then he should be treated like any other person in the NFL," White said.

But regarding Don Imus

The NAACP commends CBS and MSNBC for removing Don Imus from their networks and also recognizes that further action is needed to eradicate such hurtful speech from our popular culture.

"The announcement by CBS and MSNBC that they will no longer carry Don Imus' show is a welcome first step in removing this scourge from the airwaves," said NAACP National Board of Directors Chairman Julian Bond. "Our protests against other enablers - the show's sponsors and guests -- will continue.

Don Imus made a classless and tasteless joke that furthered negative racial stereotypes, much like what is seen at comedy clubs regularly (from comedians of all races) and heard on the Howard Stern show daily.

Michael Vick viciously tortured and killed numerous dogs.

I'm not a fan of either but I do find it hard to understand how an organization would call for the permanent working ban of the first party yet call for mercy for the second.

Count me among those who are fans of neither Imus nor Vick.

what does this have to do with the NAACP?

this sounds like Vick came to them and asked for their support. A federal court case about animal abuse shouldn't have a Civil Rights organization saying anything, regardless of the color of the defendant.

Don't worry Vick, Marbury has your back:

Asshole wrote:
"I think it's tough," Marbury said, according to Albany TV station Capital News 9. "I think, you know, we don't say anything about people who shoot deer or shoot other animals. You know, from what I hear, dogfighting is a sport. It's just behind closed doors."

"I think it's tough that we build Michael Vick up and then we break him down," Marbury said. "I think he's one of the superb athletes, and he's a good human being. I just think that he fell into a bad situation."

NAACP President say Vick is Not a Victim

Quote:
“He absolutely must account for what he has done,” Dennis Courtland Hayes, interim president and CEO of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, said in an interview with The Associated Press.

He also thinks Vick deserves another chance.

The article reports that the NAACP has no official position on the Vick case.
