Where does Jarrod Parker fit into the plans?

"Parker is only two years out of high school and was really doing everything we could have wanted him to do in terms of development. We were planning on using August in Double-A as a way to stretch out his workload a little more, with pitch counts and innings, and then have him pitch with Team USA event internationally in September. To give him a real six-month season and prepare him to come to spring training and compete. But we had to shut him down because of the elbow soreness. Heís down in Tucson now and feels great. Even if he shows up to spring training feeling perfect I think we have to manage his workload as a 21-year-old for next year. To realistically expect him to start 30 games in the big leagues for a variety of reasons is almost impossible. We just have to protect his health. Heís yet to pitch 150 innings in a season. We have to sort of move him along step by step. Heís got four very, very good pitches. Great kid, great athlete and for 20 years old he was doing very well at Double-A. Itís unfortunate we had to shut him down around August, because I think the last two months would have really built him toward í10, but we just didnít have that chance."

I think that is the best thing to do. Whether or not Parker has the stuff to be in the majors yet is kind of irrelevant if you consider that he probably hasn't been built up to handle the workload of being an every day starter.

Maybe he'll join the ranks of pitchers who got better after the surgery. Not that he isn't good now, but a turbo-charged elbow could work in his favor.

I've been debating whether or not to provide this anecdote, but it's too ironic not to share.

Back around the time Jarrod started pitching in the Instructional League back in September of '07, I made a quip to him during a conversation about his arsenal of pitches that he should learn that 'biting Liriano slider ESPN loves so much', to which he replied something along the lines of, 'yeah, and that 6-inch scar (the resulting scar of UCL replacement surgery) would be a great consolation prize.'

Oh the bittersweet irony.

I'm going through the list of "top" Dbacks prospects who underwent a TJ surgery and came back to be effective... and I got nothing.

John Patterson had a Tommy John surgery. He couldn't find his velocity or control for a long time, and eventually Garagiola Jr. and Brenly dumped him for a loogy - which was a horrible trade anyhow, even if they were fortunate enough to see JPatt have only one good season before succumbing to more injuries.

Dustin Nippert had a Tommy John surgery. He was never the same, and is still trying to figure out who he is out in Texas. I think Daniel Stange had a Tommy John a couple of years ago too. Not sure what's happening with him right now, maybe he's slowly building up arm strength. But it's a long shot. Chris Capuano had a TJ surgery before he was traded.

In short, I want to be optimistic about Jarrod, but I've removed him from any prospects lists that matter. At this point of time, if he makes the majors and contributes anything down the road, the Dbacks should count their blessings. They are not an organization with a track record of helping TJ survivors do much in their careers.

Sad but true. Best of luck, Jarrod. We hardly knew ya.

The success of rehabing any injury and especially one that requires surgery of this magnitude relies to a great deal on the patient. It is not only hard work but it is also painful and requires an enormous amount of mental toughness. Some have it , some don't. We won't know about Parker until many months have gone by.

So you're saying Dbacks prospects are less likely to "have it"?

We have had some bad results of our players coming back from TJ injuries. It is a tough one to come back from, but there have been many successful comebacks in other organizations.

The only injury harder to come back from for a pitcher is a serious shoulder injury...

I wish Jarrod luck!

Parker is going to blog about the next year of his life:

http://jarrodbparker.mlblogs.com/

He should come back useful in some of capacity a year from now. Jacob Mcgee of the Rays had the surgery and they are grooming him to be a closer or setup next year just to limit the workload.

Can't really get upset at anyone lwith something like this. He got hurt doing his job while on the job unlike a Cubs prospect who hurt himself playing guitar hero.

If any of you are interested, Jim posted a really good article on Snakepit concerning TJ surgeries and Parker. Including a section on what is it and how long the recoop time will be.

Jarrod Parker yesterday wrote:
The season for me was going great in 2009, couldnt have asked to be any healthier. Like every pitcher we have our ups and downs both physically and mentally. Not really sure if at any point in the season that a baseball player can say he is 100% healthy, but on July 30th while warming up in the bullpen I could feel I wasnt my normal self. At first, I thought it was something that would go away and I would loosen up after about 15 throws, but not this day. I proceeded to have my worst start of the year, not saying it was from my elbow but I was frustrated with my performance. Following my outing I went into the trainers room and said that something didn't feel right, and by right I meant not what I usually feel following an outing. The most crazy thing about my injury was that the outing that I suffered my injury was the hardest I had thrown the entire season. My FB averages were up and my FB peak was also the highest of the season.

Tomorrow begins my first day of rehab at the Dbacks complex with our rehab guys. I've been doing some icing and flexibility stuff while sitting on couch and watching football the past few days. This has been tough for me to do, I'm usually a person that is on the go and doesn't like to be lazy.
