Good picture of Russ Ortiz, but I dont think he will be one of the "legends."

I voted
Grace and Gonzo are shoe ins. The other ones are the question marks. I dont see RJ allowing this to happen. I went with Counsell and Williams.

It can't be Counsell because the event includes some sort of participation. Counsell still plays for the Brewers, it isn't like he'll get the day off to join us. I think it will be Gonzo, Grace, Williams, and Bell.

I'm pretty positive these are big costumes (like the Presidents Race or Hot Dog Race) and not the actual people...

I am assuming these are the big head costumes and will replace the hot dog race. I dont think the real guys will be racing.

Again, it's not the actual player that is racing. I think this is a lame gimmick, though.

It is...

If I want to watch the 2001 Diamondbacks, I'll watch my Diamondbacks 2001 World Series DVD.

Why is it lame?
I dont mind this stuff. Its better then discussing ERA,WAR,OPS, etc.... for the hundredth time with the 300 lb lady in row b.
I think some of you need to lighten up. I also like Baxter. There I said it.

The only reason you like Baxter is his ties to Tucson. Wink

Baxter is one of the top five -- if not top three -- mascots in baseball. He's had me laughing on my back too many times to count.

I really like Baxter down in Phoenix.

Hell, any mascot is better than the Jar Jar Binks "Cosmo" we have up here in Vegas.

I feel sorry for you. No, I really feel sorry for you.

If the choice is Baxter or that... Hello, Baxter! Shocked

Gotta say, it's a lot better than what this Club usually comes up with. Ever since the very, very first game in 1998, the ballpark has had the feel of a glorified AAA bush-league experience. Everything is either a schticky gimmick or borrowed from other clubs. The Club imposed a certain atmosphere on the fans because they didn't have the patience/faith in us to organically develop our own ballpark rituals. Even UPTOWN, which was my idea - and not even acknowledged as such by as much as a simple PM from a fellow DBBP poster - was borrowed from LA.

I'm just shocked that we're more than 10 years in, and we haven't seen this:

but instead of a dragon, it's a big-ass Diamondback rattlesnake.

That's the kinda stuff that would make my friend's 6-yr old son dance up and down the aisles. That kid went ape for the snake slithering across the new LED board from foul pole to foul pole.

Sandy Sidewinder (a talking snake with feet) was a better mascot than Baxter. Our mascot is named for the original name of our ballpark. That's almost as lame as naming a mascot after a ballpark, period. Top 5? I can only think of one truly good mascot in baseball. It resides in Philadelphia.

BTW, if this team winds up in last place, seeing you go "pants on the ground" just might make it worth it. Wink

I don't like it because I don't think our team has been around long enough for anyone (except RJ) to be considered a "legend." Just do a generic race or just call it something else. Just feels Minor League to me.

I like Baxter being a Bobcat, what else in the southwest do we have that can really be used as a mascot? A snake with arms and legs might not really go over as well.

Well being only 22 I grew up watching this team, and these players are legends to me. I still get excited when I get to see players like Counsell play.

The once famous San Diego Chicken is no longer a baseball mascot in any capacity to my knowledge, official or unofficial. Plus the damn thing outgrew itself and became the Famous Chicken. It crossed my mind but I threw it out since it's pretty much dead these days.

Seemed like good times at the ballpark tonight. Through the years, the Chase/BOB crowd has really responded when we're playing a team that attracts a good amount of their own fans - NYY/BOS in particular.
