It might be more fair for the CA schools to be split up, but is that what they want? The overriding powers at each of those 4 institutions might object to separation of any kind, even something as natural as the suggested Pac-North grouping, and if that position suits the interests of an additional pair of schools, that's their majority vote on that issue.

How does the four California schools and two other members make for a majority? Last I checked, Utah and Colorado have been accepted as full members of the Conference, meaning they have voting rights as well. A majority now needs 7.

True, if the new entries are granted full voting rights from the start. But those 6 would still be a tough block to break.

From the UCLA/USC perspective, wouldn't an LAX-OAK-LAX trip be easier than LAX-SLC-DEN-LAX?

From the Cal/Stan side, wouldn't you want to avoid those trips to Pullman and just take a flight from OAK-PHX? I mean, I know the Diamondbacks thought the bus trips from PHX to TUC were simply unbearable under any circumstance, but it's a cakewalk compared to getting in and out of Pullman...

Also, just as there was a past association of the Pac-8 in the potential Pac-16 alignments (WA/OR/CA), there is also a past association with the Bay/LA/AZ schools in 6-Pac baseball.

Either way, I think the Bay/LA/AZ association throughout all sports is stronger than the Bay/OR/WA, and this expansion should be for the benefit of us if we're going to be splitting the revenues an additional 2 ways.

Rumors are that the NW schools are objecting to a split from the LA schools for revenue and alumni base reasons; and also that the CA schools don't want to lose those in-state rivalry games. CU also believes that it would be placed in the South division with the LA schools to accommodate their alumni base. Sounds as though the "zipper plan" is gaining steam as the least objectionable resolution, even if it isn't the best alignment. Especially considering we've got a brand new commissioner that isn't familiar with the conference. If the Zipper alignment is the case, a logical scenario of grouping the "State" schools certainly benefits ASU. Regardless of how the CA schools are divided, keeping Oregon State and Washington State on the annual schedule is a helluva lot better than goin up against UW and Nike U.

Utah Utes to Join Pac-10 on Thursday
Posted by Kevin (Admin) on 06/16/2010
The Utah Utes will accept an invitation to join the Pac-10 on Thursday, various sources have reported.

The addition of Utah will make the Pac-10 a 12-team conference. Colorado accepted an invitation last week, and both schools will join for the 2012 season, but possibly for the 2011 season.

The Utes have been a member of the Mountain West Conference since 1999. They won the conference title in 1999, 2003, 2004 and 2008.

CSIndy.com reports that the Pac-10 will be split into divisions as listed below:

Pac-10 North

California
Oregon
Oregon State
Stanford
Washington
Washington State
Pac-10 South

Arizona
Arizona State
Colorado
UCLA
USC
Utah
