Wow, I just looked up his discography, his first recording was in 1958.

This is what I think of when I think of Dio:

Has this been confirmed? I have seen reports that say this is not true.

Message from Wendy Dio
Today my heart is broken, Ronnie passed away at 7:45am 16th May. Many, many friends and family were able to say their private good-byes before he peacefully passed away. Ronnie knew how much he was loved by all. We so appreciate the love and support that you have all given us. Please give us a few days of privacy to deal with this terrible loss. Please know he loved you all and his music will live on forever.

Although I hate him as a vocalist (as his voice sounds like someone skinning a cat alive) and his devil-horns thing is stupid, I thank him for influencing countless rock and metal bands. RIP.

I was never that much of a fan of Dio but for his type of metal he was perfect. My metal vocalist heroes are Hetfield, Anselmo, and Patton

No. Just no. You're fucking kidding. It's absolutely horrid.
Tommy Rogers and Phil Anselmo FTW.

Tommy Rogers:

...And you should know who Phil Anselmo is, and if you don't, have your head checked. The range on both of those guys is ridiculous, the way they can go from death growls to singing like angels.

Anselmo has surprising range and he changed metal vocals with Vulgar Display of Power.

Jdub, I'm not sure how you can hate Dio so much. He did so much for the genre on the whole. You're welcome to your opinion, but in my opionion, your opinion is wrong. Wink

Anselmo is a decent vocalist, but I really didn't care for him a lot. He really does have a unique set of pipes which makes him interesting. I saw him with Down when Metallica came through. He did put on a very good show.

I agree with Matt on Hetfield and Patton. Both are great. I have to throw in a mention for Chuck Billy. Great range and a lot of stylistic changes throught the years with Testament. I'm thinking very hard about seeing them with Megadeth and Slayer in a couple months.

Ronnie James was on a different planet of metal, and he will be sorely missed.

If we could keep the debating out of this thread that'd be great. I saw Heaven and Hell (classic Black Sabbath with Dio lineup) a year or two ago and he sounded great.

This was a grumpy, 65 year-old man with yet-to-be-diagnosed stomach cancer still sounding like he did in his 30's. That's pretty rare. Most singers lose it well before that. I don't know how such a powerful voice can come out of such a small man. Like his voice & style or not, he was definitely gifted.

Jdub, are you familiar with WBC? This is the same hate group that pickets the funerals of our soldiers killed in war. I can assure you that in spite of their rhetoric, they have nothing to do with God.

This is good. They give religious people a bad name. IMO, there's nothing worse than taking religious stuff overboard.

Not that I don't like religion, but it gets on my nerves when they go overboard, and picketing a funeral (a freaking funeral!) is way overboard.

Just like those people that hate on gays because it's "against God's will." Live and let live. Jeez. Rolling Eyes

In the case of WBC, it's more a case of misrepresenting than of taking it overboard.

These people don't deserve to be called religious people, they are extremists and should be treated as such.
