It seems we havent been involved in the play for Dominican or any south american prospects for a while now, perhaps with good reason considering the endless controversies coming out regarding just about every prospect from this part of the world.

However we've reportedly signed a 17 yr old outfield, Socrates Abrito ( cool name btw) and are in the mix to sign an 18 yr old infielder in Eduardo Salcedo. This is according to Jose Arangure of ESPN but as its an insider link and i dont have access to here is the MLBTR link that reported the news

http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/02/ruiz-anderson-drawing-interest-could-sign-soon.html

I've never heard of Abrito but do remember seeing Salcedo's name appear about 2 years ago when he was a hot shot prospect and the yankees were rumored to have signed him but somehow he didnt sign with anybody. I think it might have been due to age investigation issue but cant say that for sure. Anyhow we're supposed to be in the running along with the braves and the bidding could reach $2 million, which might be a likely figure since he is represented by Boras. Our system is lacking in high ceiling middle infielders (which im hoping he is tbh as it doesnt say that on MLBTR) so im kind of hoping we have a good look at this guy and sign him if he is what he is touted to be.

After doing a bit more digging on Salcedo he is actually a short-stop and i found the following from Baseball America from 2007

http://www.baseballamerica.com/blog/prospects/?p=599#more-599

Quote:
A few weeks ago, after Edward Salcedo burst upon the international scene as the ‘it’ guy, several media outlets reported the 16-year-old Dominican shortstop had signed with the Yankees. Then there were rumors he had signed with the Mariners. But in reality, Salcedo’s agent Scott Boras is still taking offers, and it appears the rumors of Salcedo signing were merely ploys to try to get other clubs to react with higher offers. So far, no one has met Boras’ asking price for Salcedo, rumored to be in the $3.5 million range. At least five clubs are currently in negotiations with Boras, but the Yankees and Mariners aren’t considered to be players at this stage in the game. Surprisingly, medium-market clubs including Cleveland have emerged as being active suitors, according to several sources. Salcedo, who only turned 16 on July 30, was expected to sign in early August, but Boras is apparently willing to wait. Calls to the Boras Corporation were not immediately returned Wednesday. "This is a high priority guy a lot of clubs are after, and his agent is playing that the right way right now," said one international scouting director. "He’s got all the time in the world. They’re just waiting for the biggest offer."

It doesnt explain what happened but it must have been serious because it now requires MLB clearance for anyone to sign him.

Oops didnt actually see that, it belongs in the farm implements section though and im sure that this thread can be useful for future developments on other potential dominican prospects.

I havent actually seen one scouting report of note on the guy but that link provided in the other thread she's that the guy does have a good package of bat and glove.

So far it is a bit of a mystery though as to what happend after he was supposed to have been signed by the Yankees or Indians. Did an age investigation dig something up?

Found the following short scouting report at Perfect Game.

http://www.perfectgame.org/players/playerprofile.aspx?ID=123749

Quote:
Edward Salcedo is a FA SS with a 6'3'', 190 lb. frame from La Vega, Dominican Republic. Big League body, strong and athletic. Smooth, easy defensive actions, easy plus arm, can really play SS. Aggressive swing, power projection, deep load from wide base, good bat speed, geared to drive fastballs, timing will be an issue. All the tools to be a top player. Potential 1st round type if in draft.

It is from 2007 but it is impressive apart from his timing issue which might to quite a few strikeouts but that shouldnt be a problem as he'll perfectly in with the rest of our line-up.

We must remember that we are reportedly interested in him with several other teams and nothing is confirmed yet.

It seems to be that the Braves are the front-runners to signing him after an age investigation by the MLB officials found that he was telling the truth and is actually 18yrs old now. Braves are planning for a visa application for him and are clear favorites to sign him.

MLBTR via the AP

http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/02/braves-interested-in-edward-salcedo.html

It is a shame because we need premium middle infield talent in our farm system and i though we might actually stand a good chance of beating the Braves to this guy with them havin Yunel Escobar manning short-stop for years to come. He is a big guy so might eventually have to move to third so maybe that's the Braves thinking on him.

D-backs must have thought really highly of him if they were willing to offer $1 million considering their previous highest signing cost only 290k. Im guessing the Braves paid nearer $2million though as they really went aggresively after him with them filing his Visa application and instigating his age investiogation with the MLB.

The brilliantly named Socrates Brito has been resigned for less money after his initial contract was voided due to use of PED's, as per Melissa Segura of Sports Illustrated.
