Rotoworld's take...

The Pirates have traded Freddy Sanchez to the Giants for pitching prospect Tim Alderson, according to Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Sanchez hit .296/.334/.442 in 382 at-bats for the Pirates this year. He plugs a big hole at second base for San Francisco. It's surprising that the Giants surrendered top pitching prospect Tim Alderson, who was the 22nd pick in the 2007 draft. Alderson was ranked as the 60th best prospect in the game by Baseball Prospectus prior to this season. Pittsburgh netted a much larger return for Sanchez than Arizona received for Felipe Lopez. No word yet on money exchanging hands, although one would expect Pittsburgh would have to kick in some cash based on the quality of prospect it is receiving. Sanchez has a $8.1 million vesting option for 2010.

Somebody (shall remain nameless) on the radio said that Bud Selig should step in and veto this deal because Pittsburgh is trading away too many of its players and not getting major league players back in return. Just getting back these minor league players. I seriously heard it.

Sanchez is about the same this year in both hitting (per wOBA) and defense (per UZR-TIFWIIW) as Lopez. Last year Sanchez stunk. He is to get 8M next year. Assuming Lopez keeps up the good work, a 6M number would be high. Yet the Pirates did a lot-- a whole lot better than we did.

Did JB not want to trade Lopez in the division?

I liked the Lopez deal, but it shows that I don't know about the FMV of decent 2b's. But then I am not being paid as a GM and don't have access to other GM's.
