How about we give August to Roberts and then call up Ryal and then start him every day in September. That was if Ryal falters, we still have Roberts on the 25 man roster (well, I dont know how many sept callups we are allowed).

We’ve heard some people pushing for Triple-A Reno 2B Rusty Ryal to get a shot with Lopez gone. But the Diamondbacks are going to give Ryan Roberts the first crack.

The two have very similar minor league track records offensively -- Roberts a bit better on-base skills; Ryal a bit more pop -- but Roberts is said to have fewer holes in his swing. Roberts also is considered the superior defender.

Ryal is putting up solid numbers in Triple-A, but apparently there are some questions about how he would handle more advanced pitching, concerns that were reinforced by his poor performance in the fall league and in spring training.
