Mlbtraderumors has a blurb out on the Giant's interest in Manny.

Whether they get him or not it definitely indicates they are looking to add some much needed power.

Giants + RJ + Manny + a little luck = definite contenders in 2009.

Manny Ramirez-OF- Dodgers Jan. 2 - 11:11 am et

CBS5 in San Francisco reports that the Giants have offered Manny Ramirez a four-year contract, but goes on to quote an unnamed team official as saying: "It's not happening."
A report that denies itself. That's a new one for us. According to the San Francisco Chronicle the Giants are not actively pursuing Ramirez at this point, but could become interested if his price drops further.

I tried to look on youtube for a clip where manny cutoff (by diving at it) a good throw by Johnny Damon. But couldnt find it. Obviously that would have been from several years ago.

Obviously--since Damon's been a Yankee for the last 3 years Laughing

Anyhow, it was back in 2004. This page has a link (haven't checked if it works)

+ Zito + Linceum. That's three Cy Youngs in the rotation. Also looks like they picked up Renteria.

Zito may have been a CY winner before, but not anymore...

Cain's their legitimate #2 starter, and thus a front 3 of Lincecum-Cain-Johnson is quite impressive, not to mention Zito and either Sanchez or Noah Lowry on the back end of the rotation.

However, look at Edgar Renteria. We're talking about a guy that in '04-'08 posted these OPS+'s:

88, 89, 104, 125, 84

Sure, he may have caught a second wind in his career in '06 and '07, but he still put up an 84 OPS+ last season. That's not THAT great of an improvement, despite being the successor to Omar Vizquel Laughing

They also have Rowand in center, but besides that, I fail to see what they have going for them... perhaps it's the dangerous Bengie Molina, the only player in history to have hit a home run in a game in which they didn't score...

Mike Hiserman / Los Angeles Times tonight wrote:
Giants' interest in Manny Ramirez is real

It appears that at least one NL West team is preparing to ramp up -- and it isn't the Dodgers.

Bill Shaikin is reporting that the San Francisco Giants have a very real interest in signing Manny Ramirez -- and might even consider offering a three-year contract.

The Giants' hopes stem from two big factors: 1) A pitching staff led by Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum that includes Matt Cain and now Randy Johnson; 2) The fact that the Dodgers, Arizona Diamondbacks, Colorado Rockies and San Diego Padres have done little if anything to improve.

Diamondbacks = 3rd Place?

Only if we fail to sign Barry Bonds

Manny Ramirez-OF- Dodgers Jan. 7 - 9:14 am et

Sources have informed the Los Angeles Times that the Giants do not, and have not had interest in signing Manny Ramirez.
ESPN.com's Jayson Stark confirmed the report, calling it a ploy by agent Scott Boras to up Manny's price.
"If a million things came together over the next few weeks, would it be possible? Maybe," an insider source told Stark. "But for where [Boras] is right now and where the [Giants are] right now, it doesn't make sense economically and it doesn't make sense for how the team fits together." The Dodgers appear to be the only serious potential suitor.

Boras: "I have a very interesting Manny proposal to you"
Sabean: "Yes"
Boras: "Four years, 100 million bucks"
Sabean: "That's... interesting"
Boras: "Righteous!."

Next day, random SF area paper:

"Giants considering a 4 year, 100m deal for Manny"

I am told that (agent) Scott Boras is spreading word that the Giants are going to make a big push for Ramirez in the next day or two. The Giants' reaction to that was laughter on the other end of the phone line, Schulman writes.

Boras is a joke.

The interesting part of this - is that LA will almost definately sign him, but at a lower salary than manny thinks he deserves.

Hello malcontent.

Giants play waiting game with Manny
Team would benefit from adding slugger, but won't do long-term deal
