Melvins Quote about Edgar

Quote:
A closer look
Right-hander Edgar Gonzalez makes his fourth start tonight - and his first since Sept. 6 - as the Diamondbacks take a closer look to see if he might fit into the rotation plans for 2007.

"We feel he's pitching with a lot more confidence now," Melvin said of Gonzalez (1-3, 5.26 ERA), who is out of minor league options. "He was probably in the big-league level a little earlier than he needed to be. . . . It's a hurdle he had to get over and, from what we've seen, he's certainly gotten over it."

Fingers crossed!

It would definitely be nice to fill out most of our rotation without going after the Dessens of the world.

What does Edgar need to do to fill that #5 slot? I say if the guy can get us through 5 innings with a 5+- ERA, than let him fill it.

I'd like to see him do more than that. I would like to see him average 6 innings per start.

30 starts 180 innings, sub 5 ERA

This is under the assumption that Vargas is gone of course. Can't have two guys like that in the rotation and expect to do much.

Exactly, we can get Vargas production from a system guy for a lot cheaper. Obviously we'd all like to see him avg 6 IP's and 3 R's, but I don't think it's realistic. If it's the #5 slot, we can live with 150 IP's and a 5.3-5.5 ERA over 30 starts. But we can't have another guy like that. It seems the problem is that we have depth in back-end rotation guys, but not much in the form of top-level talent. Same as every other club.

Who are the best arb guys on the bottom 10 payroll teams? Our best bet is probably pulling somebody like that in a trade.

So this last start wasn't so bad. What if he repeats it? Should Byrnes just straight up tell him that he WILL be in the rotation next year and see how he responds?

I didn't see the whole game, but in what Isaw, it looked like Gonzalez was pitching inside more and with more heat. He has to keep the batters honset or they will tee of on him. His breaking balls are not that good and the movement, while good, is not that good that batters will "just miss" and pop up his bad pitches. This is reflected in his HR rate.

His minor league k/w is great. Like to see more k's.

He is still young. I think they need to keep him next year even if in a reliever role.

realistically, could he be worse than vargas? that alone is reason to guarentee his a rotation spot -- less time mccray wastes watching claudio "the human rain delay" vargas.

Yeah, it's time to let Vargas go. He's had a chance to be decent, and just has gained no consistency. God help us if we can't find a net gain from Vargas somewhere.

Seriously, I wish Vargas would quit teasing us with 3 great outings followed by three really shitty outings. It would make it a lot easier to dump him.

I think it would make dumping Vargas a lot easier if Byrnes could work in a good trade for him or use him as a kicker on a larger trade. I know he won't yield much, but on the other hand he's not worth a whole lot to us and the pitching market seems to be dry.

Vargas is just not a good pitcher and he is as good as he will ever be.

Here's a thought: Why doesn't the organization try the Mazzone approach with Edgar? Teach him the sinker, point to the outside corner, and see if he can make it work.

Seemed like he was having success coming inside with his hard Wink fastball. Velocity was right around 90, which better be located. Otherwise, it's big trouble. I think EdGo is the kind of guy that can get through the lineup about twice before things start to go down the drain.

Anybody think Byrnes is tempted to say screw it and announce a starting rotation of Webb, Livan, Enrique, Nippert, and EdGon?

Maybe, there is probably not a lot of harm in having him fool around with it in the offseason. I wonder if they will ask him to play winter ball or not this offseason. If so, maybe he could tinker with it there.

Is Nippert out of options next season? I hope not because he was not the same this year.

he has one more option year.

he needs to solidify himself in the rotation by the end of next season or he will be in the same boat Edgar is in now.

There's no point in doing that, even if that's what JB is thinking--and I'd bet the farm it's not. You gain nothing by saying it, and if you can make a good trade for a better starter, you lose credibility having to go back on the statement. And frankly, there's no indication that Nippert is ready, and while Enrique has probably pitched himself solidly into next year's rotation, Edgar hasn't yet.

True, but he took some significant strides in that direction by his outing last night. If his next outing parallels this one, I intend to take it as a most hopeful sign for '07... Smile

tswinders, if you're in this thread, can you give a report on nippert's mechanics? i know they were fucked early in the season -- did they stay fucked, or get better? his stats don't seem to have gotten any better.

it's amazing how every moving part in that kid's body seems to have derailed.
